The problem with the VP in heavy oil is that it, like the old EZ Money, is best when it can be angular. Truly heavy oil balls should not be very angular, they should be arc-y. It may be a stronger or weaker arc, but they can't be "flippy", its just too hard to control the breakpoint on truly heavy oil. Thus, the VP is not the best ball on heavy oil that is carrying down, which is generally what you see after a game or two. On medium heavy oil, the particles go through the breakdown and carrydown and tame the reaction on the backend so that the ball is strong but useable.
Now, I only rarely see appropriate conditions for a "heavy" oil ball. What most people call heavy is really just what I would call medium to medium plus, while what most folks I bowl with think is medium is actually medium light to light. That is because the average bowler throws hard with relatively few revs or with a high speed to rev ratio, so heavier or longer oil is a real problem.
