Does a "soaker" ball get stronger as time goes by?
« on: October 19, 2004, 11:41:50 PM »
I've read several times, that these ball's with the SOAKER cover actually get stronger as they get more games on them... how??? I don't understand what happens to them to make them stronger?

Can anybody explain???

Im taking a wild guess here, but Im guessing that whatever they made the coverstock with gets "activated" by soaking in a little oil. Its like cleaning dishes with a dry sponge, it just works better after you wet it and soak water in to it, right? I mean, this is just what it seems like, or something along those lines....or...um....I think? lol

Sounds to me like maybe there's a minor amount of polish on the balls for appearance sake out-of-the-box and the balls come into their own after that polish wears off. Or simply the balls hook more after several games as a track gets worn into the ball. I've experienced both of the scenarios I've listed.

Greg,

The idea of wearing a track into the Soaker cover has been discussed here before, if I recall correctly. Several people said this was not the case; a few tried light sanding of a new ball to imitate this wear and the reaction was not the same.

No one has explained this yet; might be a combination of wear plus oil getting into the cover. WHo knows? It just seems to be the case that you need about 15-25 games on one before it "comes into its own".

I have just recently drilled a AU79, 4x4 pin over ring small balance hole
1" past val. The Au has plenty of length and a good amount of recovery, but not enough to satisfy my normal line. I put it on a spinner, with the track side facing up and lightly scratched the cover with a 500 grit abralon pad, then applied 2 coats 2000 degree polish over it. Now I get the reaction I was looking for, shot 717 Wed nite for the first 3 game set thrown with it. I was able to stand 34 loop it out to about 10 at the break point and back to the pocket. Good ball with a great midlane read, very angular to the pocket, most of all I only left 2 tens all nite. I have heard rumors about a break in period, but being the only one in my area throwing one I can not verify it as of yet. With a few more sets on it if I see a difference I'll let you know.

Phil told everyone what the magic ingredient was, but I guess it didn't sink in.

Hint: Where did Phil start out in this business.

Ive wondered the same thing. I have an AU79 and its been rolling harder and harder since I drilled it in June. Its the only ball I can remember that is actually hooking more over time. The ball is incredible, i cant believe its getting better.
