Weekend Warrior
« on: June 14, 2004, 12:29:54 AM »
For those of you that say you like for me to report on my weekend warrior adventures and what I used ,..etc,..heres a little report. I bowled a SASBA (www.sasba.com)member/guest at DonCarter West in Dallas 12-13Jun. We fielded over 100 teams of some of the best scratch bowlers in the world. Just to name a few,.Barnes,Fleming,C.Johnson,Archer,Lawrence,Mark Williams,Ron Williams,Malott,Rusher,McCordic,Mike Edwards,Sean Rash,D.Castillo,Gary Dickinson,......
The format was Sat. 9 games each of qualifying, with the top 20 teams coming back Sun for 20 matchplay Baker games. My partner was Mr.King of the Hill, and multiple PBA champ, Ron Williams, we finished the first day at +573 and in 13 place. In qualifying on heavy oil, with the outsides kinda dry-ish, I used a Vendetta Particle with the pin under the middle finger, cg under the ring, box surface. I averaged about 230, and had a great shot playing between 3-4 arrow with a little swing.
In match play on Sun, seems like they toned the oil down some, I started with a 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 AU79 with the shine taken down to a semi-dull with wet green scotch-brite and then a good wet rag buffing. This gave me a smooth even roll and let me keep the ball in play crossing the house, mostly played about 16 to 12 with a lot of forward roll,..after about 10 games, and the track getting dry I went to a Glossed 5 1/2 x 5 Crisis with a hole 3" below my pap on the val for roll and control. We came from 13th to 3rd,...These 3 balls were used because in crossing the house in both qualifying and matchplay I needed something that was very predicable, gave me a fast look at the reaction and still gave me control...No big skid flippy, hook monsters in this format. jim

Thanks for the report, Jim! Makes much better reading than the latest "which ball" thread.

Vendetta Particle, dull AU79, and polished Crisis.  Sounds like a nice 3-ball lineup when you need control.

My partner, a Storm Staffer, used the same strategy, he started with a smooth semi-dull ball with a 3 x 5 layout and a hole in the pap, later he went to a polished ball that looked like a 4 x 4 no hole,...we throw the ball a lot different,...he twirls the ball with speed and loft, and I lay it early with a lot of roll,...different strokes for different folks,...
