Events impacting Scoring
« on: July 16, 2005, 04:15:44 AM »
I have posted a link to the presentation I did for the IBPSIA at Bowl Expo. It contains all/many of the changes in the game that have impacted scoring.Go to the D/t web site. This was done to show the USBC how their actions and reactions do not always lead to the results they are targeting.

I must say that the presentation seems to be very imformative.  Hopefully USBC pays attention to it.  I had no clue the scoring ratio was 1:22.  I knew it was high but that's rediculous.  Those little extras in there were quite humorous as well.  Great job on the presentation and the bowling balls.

Hopefully we'll have a team in '06 again to compete on the collegiate level.  Just gotta keep the idiots out that have no clue how to run the team.

I think it is very simple. The USBC wants to target ball companies because they want to throw their "weight" around a bit.

I think it's because they're too lazy to actually regulate lane conditions, you know, actually having to check oil patterns and stuff like that...

I've read who knows how many opinions on this topic over the last three years and this power point has the most useful information of any of them.  A real start at actual analysis - finally!  What a breath of fresh air.

If the full set of facts are presented clearly to the USBC they should feel the necessity to address the complete bowling game and not try to make the ball makers absorb all the intended and unintended consequences of changes in other aspects of the game.

Let's pick some target range based on an overall metric like the scoring ratio Phil uses in his presentation and then tune the lane specs, oils, pin parameters, dressing practices, AND the few bowling ball parameters that really do affect outcomes to keep scores within that target range.

Bowling is a pretty complex system so the continued searches for the silver bullet solution with ball regulations, simply because the light is a little brighter over there, will not get us the consistent challenging game most of us want.  We've got to get a glimpse of the whole elephant.

Thanks, Phil.  (I hope your "notoriety" doesn't keep the right people from paying attention.)

tempo,

I think it would be more costly to centers around the country to have to change their pins than to put more lane oil out.

I think the the USBC started its focus with bowling balls because of its new found partnership with the BPAA.

Phil thanks for the info its nice to see data to state a case other than just bold brush statements. I guess you (manufacturers) have had it put to you as the small shots aimed at the Board seem to be in everyones (again manufacturers) replies. What do you see as a best case scenerio for the future?? How much of a hand should the USBC lend to ball manufacturers for input or advise?
I personally agree that lane conditions are the major force behind scoring but do like seeing some restriction on equipment so that variable stays in check or at least has less noise. Sometimes technology can overpower current settings until other variables are tweaked to keep technology in check. (ie, your statements of 1998 and 1999)

My opinion is they could suggest a change in the low rg value (RAISE IT) or the diff value (LOWER IT). Maybe even the friction numbers but all would be useless if the lane man has control. He could simple adjust the volume or spread of the oil to accommodate the balls. If the environment were held constant than the changes to the ball specs would have an effect. If not then the environment would change so all the balls to work after the spec changes. Catch 22.
