Title: Element AU 79
Post by: htotheizzo3561 on July 22, 2004, 01:06:45 AM
I got this in a ball league, and when I looked at the drilling instructions, it says that there is a mass bias point.  After searching the ball with my pro shop operator, we found nothing.  Is this a misprint or is the MB hidden??

All balls have a Mass Bias.  It is located 6 3/4" from the pin thru the cg in a straight line.

It's really hard to believe your pro shop guy didn't know that and you might want to check into getting another driller that knows much more about bowling balls.

But is it marked??  We looked 6 3/4" away from the pin, nothing.  We only found a red dot an inch to the right of the pin.  Is this ball a second?  Then we looked at a couple other Au 79s, and coudn't find anything!

I don't think Dynothane makes a ball with an enhanced mass bias, so there is no mark.  The assumed MB for almost every ball is a point 6 3/4" from the pin on a line drawn from the pin through the CG.

The link above shows their drilling instructions and tells you how to find the MB.

We just figured that it would be marked.  He's been in the business for more than 20 years.

Non of Dyno-thane's bowling balls have a marked Mass Bias.

Remember kids, all DT balls have symmetrical cores and symmetrical cores have a weak mass bias.  You'll notice when a ball has a marked MB it will almost always be on a ball with an asymmetrical core.

Why would you bother to mark the MB on a ball with a symmetrical core?

The only true way to know where it is is to have the ball spun on a Determinator. Mo Pinel put on a demonstration and some balls could be off by as much as 4". That is why Track and MoRich balls are spun.

Remember though, since morich is now with Brunswick he states on his website  that it is not required to spin every ball so it is a good idea to recheck any ball for a correct mass bias placement anyhow.

Yeah, the MB isn't always in a straight line from the pin through the cg, sometimes it's off to one side or the other.  It's not as big a problem with symmetrical cores, of course.

No, really, I like you.  Now, by all means, feel free to go fornicate yourself with a sharp object.

Thanks Phil, I needed that !

So, are you saying mb doesn't exist ? Or that it just doesn't really matter?

IT DOESN'T MATTER EXCEPT IN RARE SITUATIONS! Now, can I go back to sleep?

Yes, I know.    Nonetheless, the answer is correct.  As has been repeatedly stated on this board.  Sheesh JR, relax.
