Is the Au79 my new carrydown ball?
« on: July 29, 2004, 10:48:25 PM »
Hey everyone,

I'm anxiously awaiting my first season of using Dyno gear. Here's what I've got:

Anomaly (polished)
Au79
Thing
Thing Returns

I have a few other balls as well, but those the Dyno's. Anyhow, The Anomaly, with this drilling and prep, is great for moving very deep and opening up the lane. The Thing seems to be a great first ball out of the bag for the THS and the Thing Returns, with its drilling and a flatter release, appears to be my go-to ball for lighter patterns where I want to play straighter. That brings me to the Au79. I haven't really figured this one out yet. It can be used from deep inside, like the Anomaly, but, being a pearl, it doesn't seem to like to be made to cover all of those boards. On the other hand, when I try to play more from the middle and just stroke the ball, it checks up a bit early and tends to go through the beak. After pondering whether or not this is a ball that I want to keep or not, it hit me: could this be my go-to ball when the heads start to go away but there's some carrydown? My initial inkling is yes. After all, the pearl coverstock should get it through the heads but with the way that it revs up in the mids and continues through the backends it seems like it would laugh at normal carrydown. Has anyone else tried this ball on this condition? I always thought that my Diesel Particle Pearl was the only ball that would shine on that condition. Now I'm thinking that the Au79, if played a bit straighter could be golden on that shot. What do you guys think?

Gene,

The AU 79 being a solid/pearl (NOT particle) Soaker coverstock combination, it is not likely to handle more than medium carrydown unless you have tons of revs and a very low tilt and low rotation axis (like Mr. Marlowe).  It's just not the right "animal" for such a condition. Hard to overwhelm the physics of the situation ...

Yes, I know the Soaker is a strong cover; seen it, thrown it, understand it .. mostly.

Yes, The Anomaly can handle more carrydown.

I have two Element Au79s and both of them are strong in the backend.  The coverstock will cause the ball to be more angular than the original solid Element.

I guess it depends on how you like to attack carrydown.  For me, I want a ball that has a stronger backend, not necessarily an earlier roll.  The Thing Returns is my ideal carrydown ball... it gives me the most skid/flip.  I can just as easily go to my Vendetta Solid and move my feet right a little, since it's my most angular Vendetta (polished).

If you want an earlier roll, then the Anomlay is going to be your answer... maybe the Vendetta Particle.  You might want to wait a month for the ball coming out in late August or early September... it has the NEW Soaker coverstock and a NEW core that is promising even more midlane and backend.

Best of luck this ocming season!

Tony,

Please remember that you are noted for having a "ton of hand". Most people do not have that much or so much that a resin pearl, be it Soaker or not, can function as their carrydown ball.

Please take all implications from that statement, as appropriate.
