Is it the drilling layout?
« on: November 17, 2003, 07:25:40 AM »
I recently purchased a 13 lb. Vendetta Black Solid.  It was drilled with Dynothane's #2 layout - pin above the ring.  No weight hole was needed.  As far as I know, I've never had this layout before.

I'm bowling on a fresh medium oil shot with the oil pattern a little longer then usual.  I also bowl on second shift with some carrydown.

I can't seem to get this ball to do anything.  It's not getting  into a good roll.  It's sliding and skidding all over the place.  The ball is hitting like a marshmallow and has no finish.  I've tried all different lines.

I throw a simple stroker style with slower ball speed and revs.  I have decent lift and follow through.  See my profile.

Could my problem be the drilling layout?  If so, what layout would you recommend for medium oil that can also handle some carrydown?

I've used this ball for 5 weeks now without any progress.

Your comments and recommendations would be appreciated.

Does Dynothane make 13lb balls with Dynamic cores?  Could it simply be a 3 piece ball?

Some days ago I asked Dyno-Thane about dynamics in order to choose my wife's new ball, whether dynamics would become weak for lighter balls like Columbia.

The answer by Billy Yinger is as follows.

"Dynothane maintains the dynamics of our equipment all the way down to 12 pounds.I will have it added to our website."

Thanks JK300JP for that piece of information! There aren't that many around that keep their dynamics below 14 lbs. Possibly another great argument for getting DT equipment.

Lady, I threw a VBlack last night with a matte or light polish finish for about 10 games.  It drove me insane -- ten pins when flush and dead hit splits high or high flush.  I have more revs and speed than you do, but the ball just burns up energy too fast with that cover.  Mine is drilled for more length and flare than yours is, but it still needs a polished finish lest it lose its hit on the dry boards.  Mike Austin and Charlest are correct, polish this one up.  I think you will still have to redrill it with the pin near the grip centerline and the pin about 3.75 from your PAP or 4x4, but in my this ball should not be thrown dull unless you can generate about 18-20 mph or have an axis rotation at least 45 degrees and some substantial axis tilt.  What that means is if you throw relatively slow with forward roll, the ball burns up energy too fast in the dry in a dullish or matte condition.  To make it work at all, I had to explode directly through the ball to create enough speed and skid to hold the ball in the hole while creating revs.  No offense, but I think polish and, if that doesn't work (I don't think it will be enough) a redrill would be easier on your psyche and your wrist and arms.

I plan on having the ball redrilled next week and give it one more try before retiring it.  I'm a little confused though.

Charlest suggests either stacked leverage or 4 X 4.

Phillip Marlowe says he agrees with you using either 4 X4 or label leverage.  Isn't that different than stacked leverage?

Stacked leverage is a 3 3/8" x 3 3/8".  Label leverage is a 3 3/8" x 5".

I think the issue with the current drill on the Vendetta is the mass bias placement.  Putting the MB out near your axis adds roll and arc.  This is good for control especially with carrydown.  The problem is that your style (slower with stroker revs) naturally gives you control.  So now you've got too much of a good thing and the result is a weak backend and poor carry.

The pin placement of 4 1/4" from your PAP would have been fine if you'd move the Mass bias to a 12:00 position.  This would translate to a 4 1/4" x 4 1/4".  A 4 x 4 would be close enough.
