Thing Lives
« on: January 19, 2006, 01:48:52 PM »
The pro shop I'm going to on Monday has a 15# Thing Lives that I'm somewhat interested in.  I'd like to try a DT ball, and with the frequency that my old lady tolerates ball purchases, Soaker seems like the thing for me.

I'm looking for a medium to medium-heavy oil ball since the house usually isn't too dry.  I usually throw in the 14-15mph range (at the pin deck) with low revs.  I track high, very close to the fingers and thumb, and some of my balls clip the thumb hole.  I normally play between the second and third arrow (who doesn't?) and I'd like something that I can move in a little deeper during the third game.  Right now, my Mutant and Triple Threat don't seem to have the recovery and backend to do that without slowing my ball speed down a lot (which moves my breakpoint closer anyway).  I was thinking about trying a solid or pearl resin ball, neither of which I've had so far.

Would this be a suitable ball?  I don't mind putting a little less surface on it or a light coat of polish if the OOB finish is too much (some of the others I was considering are 1000-1500-grit polished anyway).  What sorts of drillings would work?

Well, I'm no expert, but since nobody else responded, I'll take a shot. I had the Thing Lives for a little while. I found it to be a very solid ball. Whether or not it will suit what you're looking for, I'm not sure. If you want some push and recovery, you'll almost certainly have to shine it up. I put mine in the Lustre Kleen and gave it a nice gloss and that helped a lot. Still, it might still be a bit early for what you want. If you still want to go with DT, you may want to consider the Element Au79. That ball is a solid-pearl mix. It will naturally get through the fronts a bit cleaner and will kick harder on the back than the Thing Lives.

I thought about putting some polish on it.  I have pretty low revs, and I've been working on throwing the ball faster with a freer armswing, and that may help it push some as well.

I don't know what kind of specs the TL has that he's got.  If they're "normal", I was thinking about putting the pin a little above my finger line, maybe just to the right, and the CG between 5:00 and 7:00.  Depends on what kind of specs he's got.

He's supposed to be getting more stuff in today or Monday, but I don't know what.  I also don't know what kind of 14# stuff he's got (I throw 14# now but would like to move up with a re-fitting).

I did think about the Au79 and the TR as being possibly better since there's some pearl in them, but I'd have to order one and it'll cost me a lot more (he usually gets stuff that's recently discontinued or on special).  If he has one of those, I think I'd rather that.  I was just curious about the TL.  I've never had a non-particle, non-plastic ball, nor a polished one, and with my revs, there's a little concern about blowing through the breakpoint with it, and I though a solid resin may give me that little extra length that particles don't without skating too far.

Both the Au79 and the TL are great pieces, have both. TL earlier rolling with a strong arcing backend. The AU is longer with a more pronounced angular backend, can be skid snappy if drilled for that reaction.
