« on: January 05, 2004, 08:46:09 PM »
we've just about beat the Anomaly into submission,..what a great ball. I have a new topic that I want to present and get your opinions. "When and why do you change balls during competition..??"  I bowl a bunch of tournaments, and time after time I watch guys change balls for no apparent reason,..or for what I think may be the wrong reason...what's your thoughts on changing..??

well, for instance, when I've changed boards , speeds, lines, and I'm still coming up high for instance, then I'll change.  I just don't change because I missed one or 2 shots. Usually, becuase I suck It's my speed or release that caused it...........I don't change THAT often

Here's my way of thinking when changing,..and I'm by no means the expert, but here's what I do most of the time..first, in league practice I try to start with the strongest ball I can, hopefully this gives me my best strike look. Since I hook the ball pretty good, with medium speed, I have to chase the "oil line" pretty quick. Usually (in league), on a typical house type shot, I can stay with the same ball for 3 games if I'm carrying. Sometimes in league I find that the pair is picking up more than usual carry down, and I'll change balls to move back to the right, rather than chase the oil, and get caught in the carry down, I may change from my Thing to my polished Vendetta Black. But usually in league I just keep moving inside with a strong ball, as long as the carry is good.
In tournaments, I start with a ball that will get me to the pocket the easiest, not necessarily my strongest ball, and give me a good entry angle. I want to start with a ball that will keep me out of trouble while changing pairs after each game. I find that starting with too agressive a ball in a long format usually won't let me use that ball very long and I have to change too soon. I like starting with some of my tamer balls until the lanes settle down, and open up a little, then I may go to a stronger ball. One of my favorites to start on the fresh in a tournament is my semi-polished Vendetta particle..as the track developes, and the backends hold a little more, I'll go to a Thing Returns, or a Thing once I know I can generate more area without the ball jumping all over the lane...On tough conditions I use a ball that will keep me out of trouble,..my Ven Black,Particle, and Crisis are all balls that are very smooth, and easy to read. In strike-fests I'll take the Thing Returns or the Anomaly.
I try and change balls with a reason in mind, usually to simplify my path to the pocket, and try and stay out of trouble and avoid opens.

New Guy,

Great answer.

I always find when I get to 3 balls it's over for me as far as contending.
All my best sets days whatever require one to two balls.

I think I'll kick a few out.

Some of my best nights have come with sticking with a ball that was working and then didn't.  Then finding the slight adjustment to get me back on track.

Anyone love this carrydown adjustment? keep your feet the same place, shallow the heel tilt and target the same board with your eyes just a couple of feet further down lane.  The effect for me is obviously less swing(required by geometry) but more importantly a less on the side hand delivery position.

I've found that nearly every time I move wide these days(left in my case), I start to pick up a bone dry spot in the heads but if I stay where I am and move say my breakpoint board of say 11 at 30 out to 11 at 32 everthing stays quite spiffy!

Twice a year I go to Vegas to bowl the Sr Hi_Roller,..One of the things that I have done for the past couple of years, and has been very sucessful, is I pick out my 2 best strike balls, one dry lane ball and my spare ball and off we go. This makes me think,..not just change balls. I see guys out there with 12-20 balls,....changing balls every squad....I love those guys,..they keep the prize fund up.
