Thing Returns - Mini Review
« on: December 19, 2003, 01:33:17 AM »
I've now used this ball enough to get a clear feel for it and where it seems to fit in an arsenal.  Here are my initial impressions:

1.  The TR is best used on mediumish shots.  It works best with clean backends, but it can work with carrydown if you find a breakpoint or area that is relatively clean and dry.  Once it begins its move, it moves pretty continuously, carrydown notwithstanding.

2.  The ball is longer than the Thing by about three feet and, in my experience thus far, hooks as much or more in absolute terms.  Maybe it isn't quite as good on hard wet-dry overblocked lanes, but on most house and sport conditions, it gets through the heads cleaner and retains more energy.

3.  As might be surmised from the above, the TR overlaps substantially with the Thing, but is for different types of oil patterns.  It is an excellent complement to the Element and Vendetta, which fit neatly on either side in terms of conditions covered.

4.  The TR needs a little bit of axis rotation angle to be at its best.  It doesn't quite work with minimal (say 15-20 degrees) rotation angle.  Too much (75-90 degrees) and it becomes less controllable.  For most of us in the middle, it hits and carries better than the Thing on most common conditions.

It's veddy veddy good.  A 10+ for Cardinal Phil and his acolytes in taking a very good ball (the Thing) and making a better one.

Well said Phillip.  Recently bought a Thing and Thing Returns as compliment balls and couldn't be happier.  Thanks to Mr. Marlowe's help and suggestions.   My Thing is a 4x4 1/2 pin next to ring finger kept at what I call 900 sheen not shiny finish.  TR 5x4 1/2 pin above just left of ring finger kept in box 1500 polished.  My PAP is 4 7/8 over 1/2 up.  These two balls compliment each other very well.

I tend to open up the lanes with Thing and then move to TR on normal lane conditions.  I don't see as much overlap as Phillip does but I can tell where he is coming from.  Probably also just the difference in our techniques.  I come around side of ball where I think Phillip has more forward roll.

What I have seen is that TR can give me problems at carrying 10 if I don't get right roll/axis rotation when playing deeper inside.  Inside of 20 board at arrows I have found with my roll and the way TR is drilled that I need to get it still to 10 or thereabouts at break point and TR carries great.  I think this is normal for many of us.

With this 1-2 combo so far in 4 weeks have shot four 700's on THS highest score 783.

Thanks Phillip and Phil.  Maybe another reason I have been on a roll lately is the addition of ABS Sport Ultra's and that new orange leather slide heel.  Love these shoes.
