tricky shot, need a little help
« on: August 24, 2006, 08:00:07 AM »
Ok guys,
What I am dealing with is a wooden lane that starts off with ~38-42 feet of oil depending, and what I would consider to be a pretty typical top hat shot.  Its nothing too hard to deal with for the first game.  Now where I am having an issue is in the 2nd through 4th games. The shot breaks down and I struggle. Everything I have is either too little, too much, or over under.  I can't get heavier solids through the fronts, pearls become over/under and I don't have a particle pearl so.. Currently I have:

Plastic

Storm Thunder Road Pearl (original oldie)drilled stacked but doesn't move like today's equipment so its a tame ball with mellow backs

Original Quantum Fire drilled pin under bridge cg in line, long but Over/Under

Morich WMB, polished to glass with a rolling drill, this actually is the best option, its a complete turd and seems to smooth the shot out a  bit.

Storm Fired Up, don't know exact drill but looks like 3-3/8x 3-3/8 to me, ball is an over/under champ on anything but perfect conditions

Storm Triple Xtreme, drilled to be an oiler ( my definition of an oiler that is) gets to mids easily and reads then arcs home.  Too early on this shot.

Now I tried out a ZR40 on the shot and handled it well for that night, but the ball just didn't fit me so it was hard to read it.  I used to carry exclusively DT equipment, but I got hooked up with Fired up and Xtreme for free with drilling, loved the Rolling Thunder and those replaced my Original Element, Vendetta, and Vendetta particle.  I never loved the anomally b/c of the true oiler stamp I had to give it. So anyway I want to go back to the good ole DT line for a little easier to read equipment. Hence, I am here asking, what should I get to help me out here.

I like to play straiter up the boards (read: not big on swinging the whole lane) I don't mind moving in as far as the fourth arrow and swinging the ball out to 5 and back, but I would definately rather go 15-7 and call it good.  I throw @ 16-18mph usually right at 17, I would consider myself a lower end high rev player if that makes sense to you.  Not a real cranker but I do have more rotation than most.  I can square up and go right up the boards all day if need be.

It seems to me that the people that are hitting well on this shot either play a particle pearl, that gets down the lane still has backend, but is consistant OR they use the ONE in the oil and have a  light hand.  I can't bring myself to Ebonite and I know DT fits my style so what would you guys suggest to conquer this shot when it breaks down a bit?  I have my ideas but I don't want to poison the thoughts here.  Thanks guys, O and if you have a drilling that you think would help me get the ball down the lane, retain decent energy and NOT be over under, I am all ears.

i bowl on a simmilar pattern. The best way to sucseed is to move alot. play outside in the begining, move deeper when it overreacts. If you have high revs you will maybe have to play a deeper and more direct line.

have you tried a ZR40 without the polish? It will better read the mid and not over react, Sniper particle pearl, 2000 grit no polish, great transition ball, again no polish with exceptional mid lane roll and predictable backend crosses carrydown like it was not present.

You might look into a Roto Grip Saturn or Mercury both are very reasonably priced under $100

ditto what lane1who said. be careful with the storm xtras polish though. too much and she'll slide all the way down. the triple x seems to be your best bet.

well actually I like the Xtreme on heavier shots so I would rather not tinker with it, unless I were to polish it and grab a more aggressive oiler... Or I could just get a ball for that house.  thoughts?
