I tried my Thing Lives in both configurations and I like it both ways.  If I were going to bowl just leagues in at my home lanes I would've left it polished.  However, bowling tournaments and more challenging conditions I like the ball with some surface to it.

It really depends on the conditions you see or the reaction you are trying to create.

If you are looking for a ball that will handle carrydown with strong backend I would recommend the Element AU79 sanded to 600 grit, this ball is very underrated.

The best thing about both the TL and AU79 (and all the other soaker balls) is the covers are extremely "adjustment friendly." Just match the surface to your style and condition and go! My AU79 review showed me that a stacked leverage w/pitched balance hole drill pattern and 2000 polish left 9-pins all day... once I knocked the shine off I had a ball with length, control and hit... My r-handed buddy who rolls it up the back can't keep it right of the head pin unless it is glossed to the max on our house shot. So experiment and have some fun.
