OPTYX Spider
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Ball NPS Score: Not Available
Just when you thought you had seen it all from Ebonite®, along comes the new OPTYXTM Spider. It may look harmless, but this clear reactive resin ball strikes on light to medium oil with a hook that makes grown men shudder. With a sharper breakpoint angle and more overall hook potential than the OPTYX Formula 1, the new OPTYX Spider is the ball to pick up when you're ready to put some real bite back into your game.

I threw this last night for the first time.

I laid it out with the Pin and the CG at 5 inches from my axis, and the Bomb in the Strong location.

I bowled with this ball on a first shift condition which I figured was going to be too much oil after ready the description of the ball, but with a little adjustment with my feet this ball worked well. I was able to change hand position and get the ball to do a variety of reactions.

The Spider is laid out similiar to my Formula 1. The Formula 1 will hook earlier and give me a smoother reaction than my Spider. The Spider is clean through the fronts and midlane with a hard punch at the breakpoint. I also like the logo better than the racing pattern on the Formula 1.

If you need a ball for medium/dry lanes this ball should do the trick. I am going to try it out in my normal second shift league when i have to go to my Afterburner in the 3rd game, I am going to pull this out and update my review.

The New Optyx Spider is Unique!

The new Spider has the heart of the APEX/Dominator weight
block on the inside, and the cover of a slightly more
aggressive clear reactive as compaired to the first Optyx-formula-1.

The Opytx is driller friendly, If you use the "Bomb Down" Apex/Dominator
drilling patterns! Remember, consult your Proshop Professional before
drilling this ball for the layout and drilling pattern best for you!

The Ball gets down the lane and has a strong hook move to the pocket!
Typical house conditions/League Conditions, this ball will work great!

As the lanes breakdown and dry-up, The balls becomes stronger!
Just let this ball fly, and destroy the pins!

The hitting power is tremendous! as expected, it's really a APEX on the
inside! Those of you who love your APEX's, Run and get this one!

Besides having a great performing ball, the ball will turn heads
going down the lane! Looking good is important sometimes!

We highly recommend this ball to all bowlers!

I have this ball drilled on center with the pin below my ring finger and the bomb at 100.  This ball goes threw the heads very good and the midlane and when it gets to the backend it makes a good move to the pocket.  I used it on a PBA 42 foot oil pattern in the practice season and it worked very well on a lot of oil for me.  I than used it on my house shot which is medium oil and had no trouble hitting the pocket.  If you like the apex line you will like this ball.  I could hook the lane or keep my hand behind the ball and go up the boards for me.  Once you get lined up, the ball was easy to make moves as the night went on.

I drilled the Optyx Spider with the pin above the fingers at 5 1/4 inches from positive axis point.  The bomb was in a strong position and there was no balance hole.  The coverstock has not been adjusted from the box condition since drilling.  The layout is one that I also use in a Vortex 2 solid(shiny)and a Matrix Dynasty.  Since drilling the Spider I have bowled on only wooden lanes but have been able to compare all three balls.  In a late shift league the angle necessary for myself to play is from deep inside(20-25 at arrows) out to 8-10 board break point with a bit of hang to the outside at break point area, the heads and midlane are quite choppy.  The Spider was cleaner through the front part of the lane than either the Dynasty or the shiny Vortex 2.  All three of these balls work well for me from the deep inside angle.  The Spider had plenty of bite but was more controllable due to the extra length through the midlane when compared to the other 2 balls.  In several recent tournaments on old wood surfaces, the Spider's breakpoint was angular but too late when compared to the Dynasty and Vortex 2.  The oil pattern's were long and heavier which is not the recommended condition for using this ball, at least in box condition.  In comparison to the original Optyx Formula 1, I can see more situations where the Spider will be more useful since even the oiliest of lanes now usually break down quickly.  The Spider is also visually easy to read going down the lane, the gold/brownish color blends in with the lane.  The Spider is probably an arsenal ball for tournament bowlers and is likely a good choice for those with softer ball speed looking for a ball with a strong core on hooking lanes.  Someone looking for a cool new ball with some bite can raise some eyebrows with the Optyx Spider.

just drilled the latest release in the optyx line...
THE SPIDER!
Drilled this ball with a 4 inch pin and 75 degree bomb.
Out of the box 299 - 750, layout performed as expected,
medium length with a more angular breakpoint, however i
am still amazed at how strong this ball was. carry has been
exceptional so far.
really fits in well in the strong bag for me, a little more
length than my adrenaline with a similar layout. so when that
ball starts to burn up i can go to the spider.
this ball will certainly not disappoint in the performance
catagory, and it looks cool too!

I drilled my spider 1 month ago, 4 strong no extra hole.  I was expecting a strong mid-lane reaction with continuing arc.  I found that reaction on a short pattern.  However, on longer patterns, the reaction was smoother until carry down happened.  Then the ball seemed to quit on the back.  When i used it on a sport pattern where i could play the gutter, the ball would check and set.  This reaction off the gutter will allow you to strike for a long time.  When i went deep, the carry was suspect.  I feel this is a conditional ball.  When it works, it works well.

Hey all, whats up?  This is kind of a late review.  Seeing that I have thrown my spider all the time.  I love the Optyx Spider.  It is drilled to go long and have a strong breakpoint to the pocket.  I bowl at a lot of houses here in Las Vegas, NV that are dry.  Especially the league i bowl in Wednesday nights at Sunset Lanes.  Its dry with nice oil.  I love using my spider as a first ball. Cause I can play right up the 5 board.  I can't really swing the ball.  But can swing it if i play 12 to like 7 or 8 board.  THats usually my favorite shot.  I can't wait for the new Matrix Conquest and the Apex Aggression to come out.  I love bowling ebonite.  I did have the Buzzsaw xl drilled up for me.  And it was a good length ball.  But I didn't like it as much as i do my spider.  If anybody wants to chat, feel free to e-mail me at hrdyboyzlita@aol.com

Thanks Ebonite!!!!!!!!

Great looking ball if you want some attention from other bowlers.  I swear 20 bowlers have wanted to buy it off of me.  However this is just not the ball for me...The reaction is surprising on the backend, but sometimes it begins hooking too early.  I could fix that by polishing it maybe.  But also, the flare potential is so high that when it flares, it causes the ball to roll over the finger holes.  Could this be fixed by placing a balance hole somewhere?  I think I just had a crappy drilling, but the pro shop owner followed the charts and measurements so I have no idea really.  Answers on what to do would be greatly appreciated.  Good ball regardless if it rolls over the finger hole or not!
