I just got my 15 lb Total NV drilled up today.  I had low expectations, as my driller and I had made pretty radical changes to my grip for this ball, after months of his suggestions and me having to realize that changes had to be made-- so we decided to go from 1/2" reverse pitch and 1/4" lateral away from palm to 0 pitch and 1/8" lateral towards my palm, 1/16" less span.

This is another story altogether, totally unrelated to the ball's performance itself, but I must point out that the change worked, and unexpectantly, without much of a learning curve-- going no reverse kept me much more locked into the ball, without having to using gobs of tape to keep it on my hand (more tape increases the reverse, incidently), and allowed me to relax my hand more, although I will have to continue to work on learning to let the ball swing more freely and not squeeze or muscle at the bottom.  Old habits die hard!

Anyhow, thanks much again to Jake at J and J at Fox Bowl, Wheaton, IL (home of 7 time PBA Champ Steve Jaros), who always takes care of me, and makes me feel like family.

Anyways.  Onto the Total NV.  I decided to get this ball, despite my reservations about the longevity of Ebonite coverstocks, based on watching pros on TV with it, as well as my experience with my friend, Jeff, whose carry, confidence, and average has been improved by throwing the NV.  His margin for error with the ball is ridiculous, he carries light shots with it, he trips more 4-7's on high shots than you can shake a stick at, etc.  He's much better than me anyways, and am not much for being a copycat, but I figured, if you can' t beat em, join em!

With my faster speed (18-20 mph at pindeck), Jake and I decided on a leverage position, pin under fingers, no weighthole needed.  I took it to my usual house, Brunswick synthetics, and got a fresh pair (standard league shot) to bowl on.

All I can say is wow.  I have never thrown anything like this ball.  For one, I have never thrown anything that made such a drastic, but somehow predictable, move on the backend.

It's hard for me to give an accurate frame of reference, considering the huge help the grip change has been to me as well.  But suffice it to say, the backend is harder and more continuous than anything else I've thrown.  This is definitely not a ball you need to overpower to get it to hook once it hits dry boards.  But curiously, at the same time, the ball is very forgiving.  If I tugged it a little, the ball would often hold and trip 4's.  If I got it further right than what I wanted, the ball would come screaming back.  Light shots carried, very often with a messenger, even if none were needed.  The ball seems to thrive in the half pocket.  Really light shots often left 9 counts, no mean feat considering that I have much more speed than hand.

In short, it was ridiculous, the ball gave me a lot of room to work with, and carried shots that had no business carrying.  Another thing that was nice is that the ball doesn't seem to do much on the front part of the lane, which leads me to believe that I'll be able to throw the ball under a variety of conditions, maybe even in heavy oil.

I just hope it lasts, because I really don't want to throw anything else.  I'll probably get another, and try a different layout, to back it up.

I'm no expert, but I bowl enough to highly recommend the Total NV.  What a great, great ball.

Got this ball by attending an Ebonite seminar, priced at $100. Best buy yet. The seminar was very informative and the ball is great. Drilled pin 4 and a half inches away from my pap. Pin below bridge. MB a little short of being on my VAL. Finished with 2000 Abralon. Gets good length, great backend, and great pin action. Works well on Heavy volumes of oil and works great on Medium-Heavy.

Had my TNV drilled up Thursday with the #2 drill pattern. Left ball in factory condition of 4000 abralon. Was playing 9-10 board at arrows out to 7-8. Shot 236 first game with several lite pocket hits.  The ball was not turning as much as I had thought it would.  Played the same line for the next two games, shot another 230 then 180. Oil carried down a bit, adjusted my mark and put a little extra on the ball.  Then everytime I would pound the pocket I would leave a solid ten, if I came in lite I would leave the 7.  I then began throwing my Apogee and it had more turn and hit the pocket hard, carried lite and solid pocket hits.  I'm going to take the TNV down to 2000 Abralon and see what kind of reaction I get.  I'll post my results next week.

Ball:
#1 Pin 4 1/2 from PAP above ring finger, mb 4 3/4 from PAP(1 1/4 right of thumb). Weighthole on VAL 2 inches below PAP. Factory Finish
#2 Pin 4 3/4 from PAP below ring finger, mb 5 1/4 from PAP(under the thumb 1/2 from centerline). Factory Finish, and have altered it to 1000 abralon.

Lane Conditions: Various house shots and PBA patterns.

HOOK:
Heavy: The Total NV is not meant to be used on heavy oil, but with the proper layout and surface prep I think it would perform well. Ball 1 shocked me because of how strong it left the pattern and turned the corner enough to recover to the pocket. Ball 2 gets into its roll sooner, but it lacks the ability to turn over enough in the backends.

Medium: Both of them fit perfectly for medium oil. Ball 1 is a beast, there is no stopping it. For my style it is rare to have a ball take out the corners as well as this ball playing so deep. Ball 2 is a smoother version, actually more of a benchmark type ball.

Light: MAYBE with the proper layout and surface prep the TNV could be used here. MAYBE.

TOTAL HOOK:
Ideal for medium oil patterns...and can typically handle med/heavy as well. Both of these balls are benchmark type balls, they just do it in a different way.

CONTROL:
Ball 1 has much too strong of a breakpoint to be a control type ball, but with that strength at the break also comes consistancy. Ball 2 is very controllable. It read the pattern earlier than ball 1 due to the surface, but is much more predictable at the breakpoint.

EXPECTED REACTION:
I had ball 2 first and loved the way it performed, I just wanted more recovery at the breakpoint and ball 1 does that perfectly. With each of these balls I got what I wanted out of them.

STRENGTHS:
Strong roll, strong hit and consistancy. The ball gives you what you make it do, and it is very forgiveable when you miss. Very useable on a wide variety of patterns.

WEAKNESSES:
Typically longer patterns will give the TNV a difficult time. Just keep it used on what it is meant for and you will be fine.

COMMENTS:
The TNV is my firt venture into Ebonite for the first time in a long time. I am very happy with every aspect of this ball. FOR ME ball 1 is tremendous. I do not see breakdown and generally only have to move my feet 1-2 boards throughout league. One thing I wanted to comment on was carrydown. Ball 1 cuts through carrydown with ease, ball 2 starts up sooner, but still does not have enough kick in the backend to finish the job. Overall the TNV is an extremely solid performer that I would suggest to a bowler that wants a very versatile medium oil ball.

Right hand stroker.
Medium revs.
75 degree axis rotation.
15-17.5mph ball speed.
Like to play standing on board 20-22 and up 10-12 board.

The ball:
4000 abralon OOB
Pin above ring finger.
MB @ 45 degrees and CG kicked just outside line between pin and mb(see pictures)
First I would like to say I only ave 165-170 and I have only been hook bowling since december 06.
This ball has really settled down my game because of it's readability.
Tonight their was a long patten and I had to play more of a straighter line to the pocket but this ball was as predictable as always and I ended up finding the pocket.
On delivery this ball is clean through the heads with a nice mid lane read and then a great move when it hits the dry boards.
This ball is the best ball I own and it's brought my handicap down.
I would recommend this ball for medium oil.
Oh and this ball soakes up oil like a sponge so if you do get one you will have to look after it, I bath mine every 12-15 games and clean it with storm reactor clean inbetween.
Great ball!

I had once said that after my last failure with Ebonite equipment that I would never again use an Ebonite ball. However after seeing so many have great success with and getting a great deal on one, I decided to shelve my pride and give them another chance. Previously I had believed that all Ebonite equipment while it lasted 200 games tops, could come close to matching Brunswick stuff in quality. Another reason I was reluctant to try this ball was I was afraid that it might take up the same spot in the arsenal as the Radical Inferno, yet I still tried out this ball. After throwing it I was amazed that this ball will actually improve your game. Mine is drilled to be a little more even than most. It gets through the heads and the mids very well and when it hits the dry, it stops, looks around, and heads left. This ball hits like nothing that I've thrown recently. It also creates its own miss room so that you can get away with more mistakes than normal. Now the two drawbacks I've seen in it is that after two games, the lanes get too broken down to get a controllable reaction. Also, after seeing Jason Couch, Pat Allen, and others throw it on Sport and PBA shots with so much success, when I got it, I started to think that I could that for real on my Sport shot, and needless to say, I failed miserably it does not do well on flat oil unless you have a ton of hand and accuracy. Overall, I would reccomend this ball to all bowlers, and seriously changed my mind on Ebonite equipment. Now i cant wait for the NVS to come out. Great job Ebonite!!!

This is a nice ball.
I am a stroker, medium revs, speed 20 mph.
I bought this ball 2 weeks ago.
I like very much for the fact that the ball has great length with a tremendous backend motion.
This ball hit like a truck very nice ball.
The layout that I used was a stacked layout with the cg in my palm and the mb 1" inch from my thumb.
I am a righty.
Specs
15.02oz   I dont know the top weight
2" pin

I will recommend to any body who has very much speed and looking for a tremendous backend.

Okay so I got this ball back in the febuary time frame. I fell this ball is a tad over rated but still a good ball for majorty of the people that ball.

I decided to lay this ball out with the pin next to the ring finger, and the cg just over the thumb. Also this ball has high top weight. This ball on a fresh shot gets through the heads great. When the heads start to fry this ball gets really hard to through. The ball starts rolling up late in the mid lane and has a very aggressive roll on the backend. This is not a bad thing and has helped on a variety of shots, but it backs off on the end. Not really dies but drives more straight back.

Specs 14LB 2OZ, 3-4" PIN, 2.00 OZ TOP
TWEENER 15-16MPH, MEDIUM REVS, MEDIUM TRACKER
DRILL #3, EARLY & STRONG 3 1/2 X 4 1/2, BALANCE HOLE 1" PAST PAP ON GRIP CENTER

I absolutely hated this ball at first, after two games it was tracked up so bad, I thought I'd have to have a full resurface on it. But the ball was smooth and strong, so I sanded it down to 400 and brought it back to 2000 abralon polished with Factory Finish to a gloss shine. Over 70 games on it now with no loss of reaction. One of the most versatile balls I've ever thrown, I see this ball as best suited for medium oil, not strong enough for the heavier stuff IMO.

This is the best and favorite ball i ever own...this ball hits extremely hard, unforgiving, and carries great... so great it feels like cheating and make the game so awesome...it is easy to read...believe me u will see some of the most beautiful strikes pwn baby....overall this ball is the best ball i ever own and i know i will improve my game everytime i pull out my total nv.......come to think about it when i play about more than 10 games on this ball it soon to lose its touch with little less hitting power and keep leaving me 10 pins dam i hate 10 pins....it was still comming in strong and i still tend to hit 200+score but i tend to do less strike like i was doing in the begginning...if this ball frustatrates after alot of games make sure u have a back up ball

Got this ball in April.  I tried to like it.  Ball is drilled pin out, with pin over fingers, 5 in from PAP, 60 degree layout.

I tried this ball on sport shots and it was too over/under on the scorpion and viper.  In general I dont believe in modifying covers, so I never did "tweak" the cover.  Tried it on THS and did not care for it.  It didnt seem to carry as well as some of my other stuff.

I have heard that lefthanders like this ball better than RH.  Eventually I sold it to a LH.  I guess he likes it.

For those who don’t know what TNV means.
The name Total NV stands for Totally New Veneer!! Catchy
TNV cover stocks are Ebonite’s pursuit  for  cover stock performance.
R & D chemist team at Ebonite has identified another component  in cover stock performance.
Demonstrating the effect of surface texture  which  enhance hook potential. .

The TNV  was smooth and strong, with Factory Finish  4000 grit Polished shine.
One of the most versatile balls I've ever thrown,
Both  the Total NV and the NV fit perfectly for medium oil.
Also both can typically handle med/heavy oil depend on your hook potential
Ball was drilled  41/2 x 4/12  (2.5”pin) pin below ring fingers
The ball starts rolling up later in the mid lane and has a very aggressive roll on the backend
Strong roll, strong hit and consistency.
The ball gives you what you make it do, and it is very forgivable
Which can helps on a variety of shots,
The Total NV is not meant to be used on heavy oil, but with the proper layout and surface prep I think it would perform well.
The ball and cover stock are very versatile to adjustments.
both balls  Total NV and the NV have their  own built in reactions
Which once again is a plus
Who wants different two balls to do the same things?.
Ebonite the company is starting to dominate the performance ball market.
Good Job guys

THE TOTAL NV...

Wow, this ball is decently clean through the fronts and has the most consistent backend movement I've ever seen. Favorite ball for house shots. The ball is again clean through the fronts and has a strong yet controllable backend move to the pocket. I hope this review helps. VERY nice ball by Ebonite.

I think the total nv is one of the best balls on the market. I think medium oil is its home heavy may be a little too much for it. I have owned the fury and the total inferno and I wouldnt trade this ball for a case of either. I dont know how the guy below me only got 10 games out of his I have had mine for a couple months and have over 200 games easy on this ball. I rejuvenate it every 50 games and resurface about every 100 depending on how tracked up the ball is. My personal favorite is 1000 abralon with diamond cut car polish on the ball. Gives it a very nice angular move off the backend. The ball carrys very well like most newer balls.

I just got a used total nv and it is a great ball goes long down the lane when it hits the dry it is going left. Also you can move left and open the lane up an it will still come back to the pins. No big games yet i have had some 200 with it so far
