Hi Guys,

Just wanted to throw a general question out there. After receiving the Xcel Particle and Game Time at the TAT in Vegas, I must say, I am very impressed with those two balls. (Especially the Xcel).

I have only been bowling with them for 2 weeks, and I will keep you guys updated with a review on both once I get to bowl on all types of conditions.

Anyways, I was just inquiring about ebonite and the "coverstock death," myth. I just inquired about a NIB Matrix Dominator from a user here and went ahead and read some reviews on it before making a move. Several users said the ball encountered "weaker reaction," after "X-amount" of games. Even after cleaning they still couldn't get the ball to react like it used to.

How many of you have encountered this type of situation with Ebonite balls in the past 5 years. I really enjoy the Xcel particle and have cleaned it after every session. So far so good and a great product. Should I have anything to be worried about?

I have seen reduced performance in all manufacturers equipment especially balls designed to handle higher volumes of oil. My V2 has 300-500 games and is on its third year of use. Still the best and have another "infant" V2 with only about 100 games and still is great on longer sport patterns. I have taken into account oil absorption on a lot of my equipment and even went ahead on all of my NIB stuff before drilling apply doc's magic elixir. Yes that applies to your inquiry Ram also.

The Ebonite 'ball death' posts really get my blood pressure going. The reality is that Ebonite covers are no more prone to 'death' than any other offerings.

I currently have about 10 Ebonite balls ranging in age from 2-10 years old, and not one has died an untimely death. I was just practicing with my Apex Intensity on a fresh pair the other day, and the ball still has more backend than anything I own. The ball has to have between 100-200 games on it.

Enjoy your new toys and don't stress. Just do the maintenance you should perform on any of your equipment -- wipe them with an oil free towel between shots, do a quick cleaning with your favorite degreaser at the end of your session, and periodically refresh the covers with the appropriate pads at regular intervals. Do these things and you won't have to deal with short term loss of reaction.

Guys/Gals,

Thanks so much for your posts. I didn't mean to start this thread to bash "ebonite." In fact, ever since I've acquired the Xcel Particle & Game Time at the True Amateur Tournament in Vegas this past February, I've become another fan! It's just that I've heard so much about the "E," coverstocks and "death," that I was just curious to see if this was just a "myth."

So far I have about 20 games on my Xcel Particle and I clean it with Track Clean N' Dull after every set. This ball so far is my favorite ball. I have it polished via the "Lustre King," machine at the bowling alley.

One thing is for sure, I've religiously cleaned my equipment after every set, no matter what brand it is. If it's for the sake of prolonging your equipment, I'm all for it. I will keep throwing Ebonite and will look for their future releases.

I don't know about "death", but I've seen Ebonite covers crack after exposure more often than other companies. (Crush/R, Pantera, Hammer Vicious)
P.S. Only the Crush/R was mine.
