Saw a "demo day"
« on: December 16, 2006, 08:27:44 AM »
i witnessed an ebonite demo day here in the NY capital region, I didnt participate in it, as i throw brunswick, but i did notice that most of those ebonites just didnt measure up on flat patterns like the one that was put out today. A lot of flat 10's and splits, who knows, maybe not enough power players.

Thought i would pass that along.

My 3 Favorite Statements in Bowling today.  And statements that I tell EVERY student that comes through our class:

"There are no bad bowling balls, only bad bowling ball reactions"

"You cannot out execute bad ball reaction"

And

"There is no replacement for the well-executed bowling shot"

I don't know about anyone else, but I don't tend to score well with

1) New equipment until I get a feel for it, especially on
2) Difficult shots, especially with
3) Balls not exactly drilled for my hand, and one's with
4) Generic drill patterns

C'mon, you're trying to get a feel for if a ball will work for your game, not score well with a ball that you just picked up that isn't really drilled for your hand.  I went to a Hammer Challenge a few years ago.  I'm one of those guys who is really picky about my fitting.  If it's not just right, I won't throw it anywhere as good as I can.  It was hard for me to throw the ball well enough to tell if I really liked any of them.

Kudos for the center for putting out a flatter/harder pattern so the participants could really see the differences in the balls.  Nothing worse for evaluation purposes than a big old wall that makes everything look the same.

LOL, trust me, that wasnt intended to be a sales pitch.

if they put that flat pattern down every weekend, i'd be there every weekend.

it was a great challenge, if anything it made me focus more on my shots.

I notice that my focus wanes on THS, getting too lazy with a few shots.

It was a refreshing experience to earn my marks.

I've watched 2 demo days where I live the past 3 years and both times the 2 different houses that held them put out a house shot that anyone could score on.

I have attended two demo days in the last 2 years and both
were very well done--one at Texas Station, the other at the
Orleans.  Both were THS and made the equipment shine.

I was at the Demo Day at the Orleans in 2001, and they ran it a bit differently.  They put the house shot on one lane on each pair, and the shot from the Summer Mini-Eliminator on the other, so that the bowlers could compare the reaction of the equipment on two different lane conditions.

What was more fun was watching Carolyn Dorin-Ballard and Cara Honeychurch practice on the "tough" lane on one pair before the actual on-lane session started.  Flush after flush after flush...like BrunsNick after he eats too many taquitos.

The demo days I've attended in the past have been done on different sets of lane conditions.  At our lanes where jkiser01 and I bowl, they've had semi-sport shots and THS over 4 sets of lanes (2 set for each condition).  This allowed bowlers to judge the ball condition for differing lanes.

In regards to the balls and layouts, I think the point to laying them out with simple layouts is to give you an idea of what the ball does as a general impression.  I like the ball laid out a certain way and I can guarantee you that with my hand size and thumb offset, I will not get a ball that is comfortable and comes off my hand like anything I currently throw.

However, if I know that layout A is going to react a certain way, then I can judge that reaction with different balls and get a feel for it...regardless of leaving flat 10s.
