Yes, another "One" topic...how is the ball for a stroker?
« on: January 12, 2006, 11:55:32 PM »
I've often found that with my slower ball speed I can have a harder time with high end, very strong equipment.  From what I'm reading on the One, though, that 4000 grit polished finish might make this a high end ball I can keep in play.  Any strokers use this ball yet?

If I do get it, I plan to leave it OOB for my league house shot, and for medium tournament conditions.

Can you handle skid/snap ball reactions?  Can you read them as well as most syymetrical equipment?  Are you out of your comfort zone playing inside of the track and looping the ball when heads start to go?

If....yes on all three I'd say you can handle strong assymetrical skid/snap equipment.  If, in reality no then I'd look other places.

To answer your questions, Scott:

I actually read skid/snap stuff better for whatever reason...I've had the most success with snappier equipment, though I have  yet to use an assymmetrical piece.

As far as looping or swinging it more, that is one part of my game that I am working on the most.  Down and in works great for me until the lanes start to dry out, then I have to start swinging the ball a little.  One of my problems in this area is that I don't have a piece that turns the corner strong enough for that.  Maybe the One will fit the bill.

I'm leaning towards this ball because my Aunt is buying me a ball for my Birthday which is on Tuesday.  With unlimited options.

The two I'd look at in the strong assymetricals especially if Auntie is ponying up are the DT Centifugal Mass and The One.  I like DT's soaker cover the better of the two.  The One does look good.

Before Aunty said she'd pony up, I was looking at getting a DT on my own.  I was looking at a mid price vendetta, though, and since she's bankrolling it I'm leaning towards the One.

BTW--the DT Vendetta line is not skid snap more even reacting rolly I term them.  Very easy to read and one of the best mid priced lines out there.

Yeah, previously I was looking at getting a control ball, namely the Black Solid to be first out of the bag.  Right now I'm using the V2 Power for that purpose, and it can be too strong from time to time.

and I should correct myself The One is NOT asymmetrical <it's symmetrical> but is skid/snap.  The One cover is much like the soaker but hasn't been out as long as DT's.

I have a 14lb One in OOB, and I am a lower-mid speed stroker. My One goes straight, and if I slow the speed down a little, it makes a very mild turn at the end leaving tons of splits on medium lane conditions. I might take mine down to a 2000 or even 1000 grit. The entry angle does have me concerned however. Perhaps it's just the way the ball is drilled.

I just bought one a couple weeks ago from Rudy Revs on Ebay for 75 bucks shipped, and just got it back from the Pro Shop for it's redrilling. Rudy had the ball sanded (no idea what grit), and I went to practice with it yesterday. The lanes were too dry for this ball to do what it really needs to with me. I ended up having to move right (I'm a lefty), almost all the way, throwing the ball from the middle arrow and out to the left to get it to hook in. Today was a different story, however. The lanes had a considerable more amount of oil, and my Vertigo wasn't reacting as hard as usual, so I went to my The One. I was able to play a nice down and in shot. First game I shot was an experimental game, trying to find the line, shot a 171. By the middle of the second game, I realized that if I kept the speed up, the ball would go down and in beautifully, and so I shot a 227. Last game, the line was drying up, but my coach just gave me an awesome tip, and that was to move my index finger next to my middle finger, which reduced the hook enough for the ball to stay in the pocket and not go through the head.

Overall, I'd say this ball is nice for a stroker on the heavier oil conditions.
