Title: Ball suggestions
Post by: thedjs on January 17, 2012, 02:07:50 PM
What would be a good ball to go to after my Mission X is too strong? Want to stay in the Ebonite family.
Thanks for the help.

You could step down to an Elevate; something that will be cleaner through the front but still give you some pop on the back.
Is the Mission X hooking too early or it is too much on the backend of the lane?

Another good step down would be the Columbia Encounter, it is a pearl that will also give you some kick on the backend, should clear the heads with no problem when your Mission X is hooking too early.

Now that you have said that, and call me crazy, you could even go to something like a Freeze or a 503C. Since you are saying the Mission gets to be too much downlane, maybe something with a little more control and not as angular will do the trick. That way the ball is weak enough where you can stay right longer and not have to move in so much. From what I have seen on the Freeze (I am about to drill the Blue/Green myself this weekend), it can be plenty strong enough for the medium to medium/light conditions.

You could step down to a Vital Energy. That pearl ball is one of the best and most predictable I've thrown to date. It works well on medium to medium-heavy conditions and has a defined breakpoint which is easy to read. It's also versatile- if you play up the boards or inside, the ball still retains energy and carries very well.
My arsenal
Heavy Oil: Storm Virtual Gravity Nano: 2000 AB Medium-Heavy Oil: Storm Anarchy: 1500 polished Medium-Heavy Oil: Track 919C: 3000 AB Medium-Heavy Oil: Ebonite Vital Energy: 4000 AB Medium Oil: Roto Grip Nomad Dagger: 1500 polished

Gamebreaker with a pin up drilling.
The GB has a low RG core which gets it to turn up sooner, you combine that that with longer pin up drilling and you get a down lane reaction that shouldnt "snap" too hard.
If you pro shop is having trouble getting GB's than a Columbia Eruption should do the trick.
same typ of core but has a pearl core for added distance down the lane. However the low RG core will keep it from "jack-knifing" on the backends.
cheers

I also have a Mission X. I took it to 4000 with high gloss polish because it was hooking too early for me even on the fresh. I love the reaction I get now that I've changed the surface but by the 3rd game I also experience too much back end hook. I was thinking about picking up a Signals. Anybody have any experience with this ball? Have not seen much feedback on it.

Both the Signals and Vital Energy use the same Vital High Mass Bias core. Only difference is that the Signals has a stronger backend with its pearl cover.

I am supremely impressed with my elevate. I love the clean read through the fronts and strong move on the back. it's a great mid range ball for medium oil. Or even try the new 508a.

mission 250K and under that the red mission.. all 3 balls go very well in order with each other..

that would work, but you dont want to stack a bunch of high end balls in your arsenal. Strong balls read very early, even if it looks like they get down the lane. if the lanes get kinda cooked then you have no shot getting something through the front of the lane consistently.you will have lots of roll out and lots of flat tens. broken down lanes need weaker balls.
Definitely drill a midrange ball: Elevate, GameBreaker, Eruption....
or Upper mid Range: Warning Sign, 716c
mission 250K and under that the red mission.. all 3 balls go very well in order with each other..
