Big Time cleaning
« on: August 29, 2005, 08:18:33 AM »
I just bought a big time and have used it for 6 games.  How are I supposed to clean it?  I wipe the oil off of it everytime I get up to bowl...part of my routine.  The pro shop said use scotch brite pads...the only scotch brite pads I know are used for cleaning dishes.

Also would a weight hole make the ball break heavier to the pocket?  I like the way the ball rolls but I would like a little more break into the pocket.  Thanks in advance.

While there are many good cleaners on the market, Track's Clean and Dull is probably the best. It goes very deep for a cleaner. Other good cleaners that I have used are Brunswick's Remove-all, Ultimate's Bowling Products - BlackMagic Rejuvenator, Legends cleaner, Neo-Tac's Liquid Nitro. All are excellent daily cleaners.

The Scotch Brite pad should NOT be used for daily cleaning; it will "sand" the surface. It is not a cleaner, but can be used with a cleaner, say every 15-25 games to restore some life to the ball. Balls, used over a long time, will ultimately migrate towards a 600-800 grit finish. Not sure what the BigTime's solid/particle original finish is (probably 800-1200 grit dull/matte finish), but it will stay that way for those 15-25 games easily. use the correct grit of sandpaper/abralon or Scotch-Brite, specific to the ball in question. Do not use just any piece that's laying around. A word to the wise is sufficient.

Oh, to partially answer the weigh thole question:

a weight hole will not add backend, as far as I know, in absolute terms.

A WH inside your PAP will reduce flare (makign the ball go longer and hook slightly less overall).

A WH outside or beyond your PAP will increase flare making the ball hook earlier. (For pearls or polished balls, the cover may help retain length and save up some of that flare for the backend, but basically the ball will flare earlier and hook more.)

depends upon the location of the weight hole.  It can be used to decrease flare (located closer to the pin) which would give a smoother reaction, or used to increase flare (further away from pin) which would give a stronger reaction.  How the ball is currently drilled determines where the weight hole can be placed....  as it still needs to be within correct static weights.

cleaning solution: 1 part simple green, 1 part water, and 1 part rubbing alcohol

spray onto the surface of the ball after every league night//practice session.  Wipe off with towel...  will take off most marks and oil.

Your Big Time is 1000 grit Abralon pad. You can use a Scotch Brite pad, White ia 1000 - 1500, depending on the pressure you apply. If you do this by hand, make sure you do the entire ball with the same pressure. I wouldn't suggest it with less than 75-125 games, all depending on the amount of oil on the lanes. But NEVER ever after each set.

As cleaners, Clean N Dull is about the best, IMO, that is made to deep clean and "de-oil" the ball. Day to day cleaners, there are tons of them, but as cheap as we bowlers are, Simple Green/water is a great all purpose cleaner. I created a cleaner I use and sell, it's not that hard to do, just find something that works for you and there you go. One word of advise, make sure all the things you use are on the "approved" list, then you won't have any problems.

Hope this helps, if you have any questions, message me and I'll do what I can to help.
