Carry problems with the TNV?
« on: February 19, 2007, 03:06:00 AM »
Is anyone else experiencing major carry problems with the TNV?  I bowled for the first time with it in league last night, & while i wont go into what i shot(its sad, & we will leave it at that) my carry was HORRIBLE.  Im the first to admit that i wasnt throwing the ball very well, but it seemed that when i threw a great shot, i would bury the hole & leave a 9 pin, or a ringing/flat 10.  A few times i left a 7-10, & once, i dont know how it happened, but i left a flush 4-6.  I was getting VERY frustrated, but gave the TNV the benefit of the doubt & figured it was the lanes.  So i switched balls & started carrying all sorts of stuff, thru the nose would carry, really light mixers were working great, high flush was 10 in the pit every time.

So my question is, whats the deal?  Ive heard SO much about the TNV having such great carry, while i have what seems to be the worst carrying ball ive ever owned.

You might try taking a bit of the polish off the cover of the ball....not much, just have your pro shop give it a quick buff with a 4000 grit pad. That might help.

1000 and then repolish with high gloss, it puts some teeth below the shine and makes the ball roll sooner but still backend. I used it again last night like this and again it is great rolling and hooking ball.

btw couch has used his at 1000 matte on a few on the shows, so just because it is pretty from the box does not make it the right surface for you.

THis ball carries everything for me. I took mine to 1200 grit. Play around with the surface on the ball, should improve the carry for you.

This is my first Ebonite ball in years and I love it.  Last week in league, in 36 shots, I didn't leave a single 10 pin.  Everytime I was in the pocket, it was 10 in the pit (let's not mention my misses).  How is yours drilled, what's your style, etc?

I now love the carry of the ball. When I first got the ball wasn't too thrilled, but cleaned it up several times by "hand" with a White Scotch Brite and ball cleaner (Clean N Dull & Power Wash).

Made all the difference in the world for me (perhaps even having more games on it also helped) .

If you left a 4-6 you were not flush......odds are that it looked flush but the ball ran really hard into the pins and went through the nose. SO I agree with the others about knocking some of the factory surface off. HOWEVER...I think that 2000 abralon would be a good step..no polish. Adjust it from there if need be.

I have also found the carry of this ball to be really good.

I have also had carry problems.  The ball does not hook as much as my One and the One has well over 150 games on it.  I don't believe the TNV is burning up too much energy too early.  I have had this problem on several different conditions and lane surfaces.

The TNV has the pin below the ring finger and the MB right of the thumb.  The cover is in OOB condition.

I will try knocking the polish off and see if that helps.

As for a profile, i need to make 1, but i have medium to high ball speed(18mph) & med/high revs(350ish).  I have the TJ drill thats actually on the ebonite drill sheet(different from the 1 in the video).  Im having no trouble getting the ball to move, & im hitting medium to heavy oil with somewhat mild backends on old wood lanes.

Im considering dropping to 1000 or 2000 abralon & adding the factory polish back.  Just giving it a little more teeth should give me a slightly less angular break point & get the ball to drive a bit harder for me.  I just havent been able to open up the lanes as of yet.

Any other suggestions?

Actually, the ball reacts exactly the way i wanted it to.  The problem is, it reacts that way in a different center than the house i bowl at.  On synthetics with somewhat decent oil, the ball is AMAZING.  On my old POS wood lanes with oil that is anything but a wall, its just a bit over under for me.  I think im going to take it down to 2000abralon & repolish, hopefully that will give me a slightly earlier roll & get the ball to drive a little better.

While im not TJ, i lacked a ball that clears the heads & doesnt roll TOO hard in the midlane.  This ball does just that, i just need a slightly smoother break point to work on the old wood lanes i see most often.

I found this ball to have exceptional carry off the dry.  In the oil, it's only average.

Search oil! No oil in the heads, no carry.

I drilled a 14# TNV for my wife who rolls about 12 mph with 90* axis rotation (former full roller).  She has always had trouble carrying 10 pins because of the ball speed. First night out, I saw her kick out the 10 4 times, which is 3  more than usual.  Additionally, we have drilled over 30 TNV's since the ball came out and have not had anyone complain about the carry.
