Conflicting Reports/Reviews
« on: February 17, 2017, 11:31:48 AM »
According to an Ebonite video, the GB-2 is the strongest followed by the Phenom, Phenom Pearl and the MVP.  They show the MVP and Phenom Pearl as being very close in overall hook.  However, some of the reviews I've read on here say the MVP is several boards stronger than the GB-2 solid.  Some of the other things I've read indicate the Phenom is the strongest of all the Game Breakers.  If someone has used them all, how would you line them up weakest to strongest?

Would you think the GB-2 solid would be the best as a "benchmark ball"?

GB2 solid is a perfect benchmark
i have several of them
IMO, for me, the gb2 solid, the phenom are the 2 good ones here
the gold was hit/miss for alot of people, the MVP was a great seller and the phenom pearl has the strongest cover of the GB2 series, which isnt a great matchup for my game
I just didn't do well with that responsive of a cover in the THS leagues I'm in
No need to really have more than 2 or so of these.
the Sideswipe solid is an impressive piece which is a step above my GB2 solid

Thanks for the replies.  Based on this, would you consider the Phenom (not the pearl) to fit under an Elite if the Elite had the cover changed to 3000?

That takes me by surprise. Didn't think the Sideswipe Solid had quite that strong of a coverstock on it. How does it compare to the Rebel Solid?

Rebel solid is more of an even rolling piece
Sideswipe solid is a bit longer and a bit stronger down lane IMO
Stronger acing and super predictable
I will be drilling another one with a different pin distance for Nats

While that may be the order of board coverage, not sure it would be the order of usage...

I have always loved the V2 core.  Had the V2 solid, Gamebreaker, GB2, GB2 MVP, and now Phenom Pearl.  The MVP is a great benchmark for me because it controls front to back on house and sport shots.  I can't believe how many times I didn't give it a second thought on sport shots only to finally have that left to try in the bag and voila!  Biggest issue I have had is when carry goes away, it's absolutely gone.  I'd like to say it makes perfect sense to go to the Phenom Pearl at that point but honestly with the oils being used, the lanes tighten up down lane as opposed to open up.  So the pearl winds up more over under at that point.  I also frequently have to refresh the MVP coverstock by hand, compared to other stuff anyway... but I've learned my lesson, it always stays in the bag.

We haven't tested it but Jason Couch made a big deal about it being a great benchmark.  Just wasn't sure if was marketing hype or the real deal...

Based on this, about the MVP, would it not be better to just use the GB-2 Solid as a base-line ball?  Or maybe go to it when the MVP does not carry?

You might think so but the MVP for me has better front to back control.  GB2 is much stronger and requires a jump in for me.  I would use the GB2 when there is a bit more oil.  MVP has the perfect shape and control to be the benchmark for me.  To your last statement, yes that's what I was thinking.  I just had a refit for most of my equipment and just hadn't refit my GB2 yet.  Otherwise, I agree that was the next consideration with the lanes getting tighter downlane, switching the the solid GB2.

I just test so much equipment that it's hard to consider refitting every older ball.  But I absolutely love this core and it's been very good to me.  That's why the GB2 is in the shop now to be refit :-)

I'm beginning to envision future bowling and it looks awesome.   Each bowler will have 3 four ball roller bags for league.  One ball for each frame.  He will punch in all the known and unknown factors for each frame in his smart phone, get a suggestion for what ball to use, after "conditioning the surface" to a specified grit.   Then consulting with his ball b---- for how and where to deliver it.  Especially what lane he is up on. Then stand and contemplate for 5 min.   Miss the headpin, start the whole process over for the spare. Multiply this 10 times for each bowler.  Early league will start at 5pm, finish about 5am.  USBC doing studies on how to speed up the game, ball manufacturers working on a "throw away ball", use it once and leave it at the center.  Special containers furnished for disposable balls.  They will be recycled to new balls only costing 575 dollars.   Each new ball is the most hooking ball ever made.   USBC still looking at how to recruit more bowlers.
