Weird tracking...
« on: June 14, 2003, 05:21:07 AM »
My friend has got a 15lb. used Predator Jungle Green that's I'm wanting to buy. It's got a 2.5" PIN and about 3 3/4 oz. of Top Weight. The PIN is centered above the fingers with the CG kicked out 3/4" from the centerline and no weight hole. It's also sanded to 600 grit.

But the dadburn ball trackes 1 flare ring over my thumb hole! Not my finger hole, but my thumb hole! I can hear it thump once, and sometimes twice, going down the lane.

What's the reason for this? I don't do this on any of my other balls.

Could it be the low flare drilling? Or could it be that I was using this ball on too dry of head oil (I've heard that by polishing a ball sometimes can get it off the thumb hole or fingers or something - something about when a ball is sanded, the sanding makes it won't to flare MORE and therefore makes it track over the holes... something to that effect???). So does anybody have any recommendations??? Will polishing help???

I also posted this in the "drilling" section, cause I wasn't sure which would be seen by more traffic and which was the "correct" forumn.

Thanks!

Ric - Are you throwing the ball or is your friend throwing it?  It can be caused from several things.  One is the release itself and another could be from different set of pitches.

I'm the one throwing it. It's his ball, but I'm testing it out and thinking about buying it. Our thumb pitches are VERY similar, but his finger holes are pitched 1/4" towards the palm... I don't know how that would effect it, though? I'm wondering if I could put a weight hole somewhere in the ball to get it off the thumb hole?

Well the 600 grit sanded finish is pretty arressive and may be causing it to not have any skid in the heads. This could also be caused by not having enough oil in the heads. I had a similar problem with a Blue Hammer...could not use it unless I had some oil to use it in otherwise it would thump, thump, thump.

Your PAP's could be different enough that your track is higher and clips the thumbhole. Once the ball starts to flare, it comes off the hole.

Another possibility is the  weights. Personally I need finger and side weight in ANY ball I use.  It is just the way I throw the ball.

Have you ever thrown a ball with a similar drill pattern? Maybe you can't throw that particular drill pattern.
