Title: Ebonite Tombstone - Help
Post by: Reality Check on June 12, 2003, 05:24:11 PM
Have just been pretty much given a brand new ebonite tombstone, but not sure really what to have done with it! I have medium to high revs and medium ball speed, and my current range of equipment is as follows:
Brunswick Purple Monster (drilled early hook)
Brunswick eliminator (pin above fingers for length)
Storm El Nino 2000 (Drilled pin to right of fingers, quite aggressive)
Track Stomp Pearl (Drilled pin above fingers, length)

What drilling would people recommend, and am I right that this is a big hooking ball?

This was not one of Ebonite's better balls.
Probably not worth the time to drill it.

ouch! not a glowing recommendation then. Not a good sign. Oh well, any idea why it was such a bad ball? Any help would be appreciated.

Actually they weren't a bad ball, probably just not as versatile as some of the newer particles, i've seen up the boards players bowl OK with it. It probably gets better length now on the 'newer' oils than the stuff of a few years ago.

One of my teammates still throws one of these.  He's a medium speed, medium rev guy with a pretty high track.  He has a basic label drill on it, and he gets a really smooth arc reaction out of it.  It doesn't give him a lot of room.  Miss outside and it won't recover, miss inside and it sits on the nose.  However, when he gets lined up the carry is typically pretty good.

My guess is that it will likely overlap with your Purple Monster, but if it's free, why not give it a try.

Agreed very similar to Purple. I would recommend a length drilling unless you see floods. It was a pretty high load of particle if I remember correctly.

Interesting. As I have had my monster since its launch, would this be a good replacement ball for that, or would it hook less? Am thinking that could be a useful replacement as it is a freebie

The ball felt like a bar of Lava soap.
Reved up and wanted to hook at your toe.
So it used up most of it's energy in the front part of the lane and had nothing left for the back part. No matter if you tried to move in to catch more hold or not.
I'm sure their are better pieces of equipment out there like another monster.

I drilled this ball when it was first released.  The ball hooks at your feet and the coverstock is high maintenance.  The Tombstone works well on a flood, but you will have to bag this ball on other lane conditions.

It had medium length for a high load particle ball, when it first came out. It hooked but would definitely be classified as a control ball for heavy oil. Even if you put the pin over the bridge, it will still be a control ball for heavy oil. Its ball path will generally look like an old solid urethane.

I would VERY STRONGLY recommend using Doc's elixir before you use the ball. From what I understand it was one of Ebonite 1st attempts at reactive/particle (?) and that the micro pores in that ball are relatively big, which is why it dies out soon.

I, of course, could be wrong.
