Particle Equipment??

Particle Equipment is the only thing I am really missing from my arsenal. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about particle equipment because I've always been told that it's a waste of time because it's impossible to maintain.

"Once the Particle is gone from the surface, no amount of 'resurfacing' is going to put the ball back to OOB condition."

Can you make some recommendations of particle equipment and give me reasons?

The Smash Time solid is a particle solid ball, and the Enriched Uranium is a particle pearl, so I'd say you aren't exactly missing one.

Whoever said that particle equipment was a waste of time was wrong.  I havde had my Super Carbide Bomb for a year now, and have had NO trouble whatsoever in maintaining it.

I don't understand this. In your next Ebonite post you say you love the Smash Time solid, which is a particle ball.

Sorry,

1. I was under the impression that the Smash Time was only a solid
2. The Smash Time is quite old, and doesn't have the hook it used to (although it still hits like a dream)
3. The Smash Time has an extremely low particle load, and it doesn't really do the "particle" part of my arsenal any justice

Solid particles do not have to have  aheavy load to handle a lot of oil. The resin base in which the particles are embedded have a lot to do with the oil handling of the ball, as well as the nature of the core and how it is drilled.

There are many particle pearls, but fewer solid particles these days, as people's unwllingness to properly care for them has made many manufacturers reduce the number of solid particle they make.

Currently Roto-Grip makes the EPic Battle, Brunswick makes the Mammoth, Storm makes the Passion and Lanemasters makes several (Big Bang, World Class, Terminator, Yeah Baby!), Lane#1 makes the Carbide Plus, Visionary makes the Centaur AMB Particle that can handle heavier amounts of oil.

The Passion is a solid reactive, not a particle.  The Trifecta was a solid particle, as is the Jolt Particle (duh?).  There's no solid particle in the Fire line, but the Pyro is a pearl particle.  Morich has plenty of solid particles, I think.  Dynothane's Pure Energy was a solid particle (and a Soaker, no less, so longevity should be great), Joe and tekneek have some heavily discounted.

I am currently filling the particle portion of my arsenal with an Apex Aggression.  If you want to talk about old with a lot of games, you should see this piece.  I have had this ball for a couple years to the best of my memory and it still rolls and hits as well as any other ball I own.  It is purely particle, I have resurfaced with Abralon once (sandpaper basically destroys particle balls), and I wipe it off between shots and clean it after every set if not before I put it in the bag during play.  I also had the Pure Energy, and as shelley states, it was a great ball.  However, a friend is getting into the game and I sold it to him due to not needing it myself anymore.  ALL balls nowadays come with a heavier maintenance schedule than the previous ones, but they also outhook, outhit, and can possibly outlast them if taken care of.  Particles do not always fit every bowler (not that any other kind necessary does), but a good one can certainly help when you T-bone the Exxon Valdez.

Who told you this bullsh*t? First of all, particles are part of the coverstock material. You can sand or prep a particle ball just like a normal reactive.
There are also different particle technolgies around - carbide particles which act like spikes on a tire and create early friction (Brunswick), and soft particles which "flatten out" on the lane and create a greater ball footprint (Storm). You will also have to consider particle load and size of particles, since each of these factors can be beneficial for a certain lane reaction.

I am not sure about Ebonite, but I think it is also carbide. Particle technology has become quite sophisticated, and the modern coverstocks with lots of early grip seem to render it obsolete. Still, I personally find the extra control of a particle ball, especially the light load balls which are pretty close to pure reactives, very handy when it counts and you need consistency in longer formats of play.

Basically, you will see an overall smoother and earlier reaction by a particle ball than with a "pure" reactive. Balls with medium loads or higher tend to grip the lane very early and distribute the energy evenly, so the ball will not appear to hook a lot, and you might need very good head oil to have the ball perform well.

Maintenance is IMHO not more conmplicated than any other ball, just make sure to extract the oil frequently and refresh the surface every now and then, but that's not different from reactive balls.

Agree with the maintenance comments, I have an apex intensity which still works.  Just read the manufacturer's recommended maintenance procedure and you should have several years of use.  


Too bad my obsession split (bought it 2nd hand) That was one heck of a rolling ball. Had it for about 4 years.  Good thing got a NIB as back up. Point is particles do last.  Just doing some research on maintenance.
