For people that have thrown/seen the Savage FLIP
« on: March 09, 2004, 08:17:57 AM »
What kind of ball is this ball really?

Some say it hooks early than expected and some say that it goes long like it was designed to. What do you all think???

How much Oil can this ball handle? Is it a good Medium/Heavy Oil ball or a good Medium/Drier Medium Oil ball?

Also... I would love to find a 15lb used one drilled Right Handed if anybody has one for sale... message me or leave reply here.

Thanks!

I've got one and love it.  Mine is drilled 90 degree, 4.5" pin to PAP - basic label with the pin under the ring finger, if you will.  I'd say mine does what it's supposed to do - get down the lane and make a strong move.  The cover isn't weak, but the high RG core gets the ball through the heads pretty clean.  It moves a tad earlier than a three-piece ball, but is more lengthy than my Inferno and Triple X.  For me, it's a late-shift ball for heads that are going away fast and back-ends that are getting sloppy.

I think it's more of a medium to medium-dry ball for most people.  However, when mine got fried after using it on 1st-gen Pathfinder synthetics, it became a pretty darn good oil ball!  If you've got enough hand, it could work on medium-oily.  But I think the lengthy nature of the core gets the ball to push too far to be a good choice for oilier conditions.

So are you saying that it can handle a little bit of Carrydown???

Pss... what is the surface on your ball... lightly polished or highly polished?

Thanks for the comments above --- I've got a used one coming via UPS from a buddy -- it's supposed to be drilled to go long and finish strong but I don't know what the drilling is right now --- can't wait to try it out based on your comments.

I havent had much luck with mine. It is set up pin over bridge, cg under. If there is carrydown it doesn't seem to want to finish, but if I move right it seems to want to go thru the nose.

Took it to a tournament where the shot was not as long or wet and as long as I had backends the ball worked great but as soon as the shot got spotty from the play the ball became Over/Under for me.

Took the polish off it with a scotchbrite(green) pad and it got pretty strong, but I already had a ball I used for the condition it now covered, so I probably won't be using it much.

To give you an example, the guy I got it from is now using a sonic boom drilled a little stronger and plays the same line while seeming to get a little more "pop" on the backends, but that may br from the drilling, not just the different ball.

I threw one at a demo days... although the fit wasn't that good;(too many people), I was still able to get the ball to move on a 33' buff to 38 ft, light oil pattern.

recently, a friend, to whom I recommended the ball shot his 1st perfect game with it... in his hands the ball is more skid/heavy forward roll.  In my case giiving it a bit of a side roll, I get a skid/ flip. Pretty good recovery, But i doubt if it can handle carrydown with the box surface.

It handles some carrydown ok, but like Phatdon said, it might need to burn off some of that initial polish to do so.  I've had a couple of surfaces on my Flip - synthetic burn, which was almost like a 1000 grit; rubbing compound/NeoTac Renew-It, which produced a box-like finish.  It's currently a few dozen games into the compound/Renew-it surface.  This seems to be a good surface for me to use on a drier heads and carrydown condition.

Finally got my flip (2nd hand) drilled up last night and hit the lanes.

Pin is above my ring finger, cg about 5 o'clock from the pin.  Ball has a 4" pin.  My pap is about 5 inches, 1/2" up.  so for me this is a 4X3 drill.  Ball had 1/16 of top wt. left.  I'm a very high tracker, track is about 1/4 inch from holes, release was about 60 degrees.  Condition is box with a very light track.

Started with relatively fresh lanes.. some open bowlers ahead of me, but not more than 8 games.  Lanes had medium light oil volume, oiled to 34', not sure how long the buff was.  Ball moved nicely with a strong forward roll after the break.  Started standing left foot at 20, ball skidded (but was revving) and rolled strongly, with this condition I got about 5 boards of swing area at the break point.  Standing at 35, drop zone at about 29 (foul line), I added revs and sent the ball to the 5th board, ball was still able to recover nicely.  Overall a very good ball for fresh lanes.

Some points I notice:
1) pins were keep low most of the time.
2) after 2 games a friend came and joined me, together we put about 20+ games into the lanes.. The flip can handle some light oil carry as long as there is some dry to break on.  We have a friendly center, and before closing, I was allowed to walk the lanes and there was definite oil carry in our lanes, but the flip was still able to perform albeit in some cases there was a bit of "hang" at the break.
3)Ball has excellent recovery, I intentionally babied my shot and the ball still recovered enough to get a light head pin hit.

Hope this helps.
