Total NV = almost exact reaction of AMF Maximum Velocity
« on: February 06, 2007, 10:36:47 PM »
just got my Total NV yesterday and was pretty shocked at how such a high grit ball NEEDS oil.....

Anyway, is there anyone on the face of this earth that has had both the Total NV and AMF's Maximum Velocity?  I got a funny feeling I won't find anyone to help me out with this....  but the two balls seem to have the exact same ball movement, the TNV needing more oil of course.

The ball starts off skidding straight and all of a sudden makes a move that is not quite a snap, but a hard arc that continues thru the pins.  Needless to say, I have the same problem with the TNV that I had with my Maximum Velocity, and that's going high flush: almost always the ball is so continuous thru the pins that 4s, 9s, and 4-9s are common, while light mixers work best, either their all in the pit or the ten gets popped out 99% of the time.

any thoughts?

I had the maxiumum velocity and terminal velocity and both of those balls for me where junk. I did not like either one of them. They where drill a version of stacked, thats my favorite drilling.. The carry was aweful.. They where both very speed sensitive balls, more so than others..

My Total NV is drilled 12:00 stacked (3 1/2 x 3 1/2) and in no way for me does it have the reaction of either one of the 2 velocitys I had.. The carry and smoothness of this ball is by far the best ball reaction I have had personally in years and I try alot of the newer stuff..

I've used both. In fact I still have my MV laying in the basement next to my other junk. The MV made a nice long skid for me, but, never wanted to make the turn towards the pins. My Max Vel was nothing more than an expensive spare ball, which is useless to me because I dont carry a spare ball. My MV has a total of 10 games on it with two different layouts. NEVER got it to work.

My TNV is a monster. Pure and simple. I dont know if anyone else has noticed this, but when the TNV hits the pins it has a much sharper CRACK to it than any other ball. I have had the ONE, BIG ONE, and still have the AO. All hit very well, but the TNV just sounds much more powerful than the others. Carry is very very good. In fact, I owe a few strikes to the TNV that I did not deserve. But, I figure it's just payback for the two flush pocket 7-10s I experienced.

Greg T,

I agree with you the TNV is a monstor for me as well. I also have had a couple of the pocket 7-10's but thats expected every once in awhile with any ball for me!! LOL..

I again see no comparison of the TNV to any ball I have thrown in a long time.. Bowling is about match ups and the last 2 ebonite balls I have drilled (TNV and smashtime pearl) match up to my game perfect..

I agree that the MV is speed sensitive, thats why I have dulled mine to 600 polished and it has been much more versatile, and not so speed sensitive.  And I see what you mean by a good spare ball if there's oil, as I have bowled my best game with it suitcasing it on bone dry lanes, dare I say 295!

Anyhow I wasn't comparing which ball was better, cause we can all agree the TNV is awesome.  I was just merely saying that the MV comes closest to the description of the ball movement to the TNV: skid, hard arc that never seems to stop, not a big snapper.

As far as pin carry, the TNV is pretty dynamic, it will give you many carries you don't deserve (much like my Doom), but it also leaves some interesting head scratchers, like that ridiculous 6-7 yesterday that had me and the next lane wondering how that happened.  But hey, that was my first night with it and I wasn't playing in the oil at the time - gotta use the ball where it's intended :-)

Since I'm in the Ebonite forums I will just end by saying this ball is awesome, and I will have it with me every night.  I'm a Brunswick guy btw...  much love for Ebonite now, they really did their research on this one

...just a lil tidbit from the most recent review of the Maximum Velocity...

"Very impressed with the Maximum Velocity. With this drill, ball gives me good length with a smooth, hard arcing backend. Very even rolling...  As far as carry goes, decent. Like i said it throws pins around on mis-hits, but occasionally a 10 or 7 will stand on what appeared to be a pretty good shot. overall though, pretty forgiving...  Another thing I like about the Maximum is the fact that no matter the shot it seems like I can play within the same couple of boards everywhere."

Some of this sounds familiar about the TNV, just on this thread alone.

I get it, good ball vs. a not so good ball, but characteristics of reaction are similar, IMO - skid, instant hard smooth arc, drives thru the pins, leaves wierd stuff.

I am in the process of resurfacing my Maximum Velocity right now, and I will take the two out tonight and report back.  I'm interested to know if no one else is, I hate wasting money on a ball that has the exact reaction of one I already have....
