EXTREME wet-dry advise
« on: January 30, 2009, 01:24:51 AM »
I have been bowling in a new center this year with a higher volume of oil than I'm used to. edit: this is creating a very wet center and extreme dry outside portions, they are not blending very well.  The center owner is not a bowler, so he realy doesn't understand that using more units does not prevent breakdown of the pattern. I believe they are using around 50micro litres across, roughly 40ft pattern.  I have tried many balls, new and old and have yet been able to really match up.  My average has remained around the same as last year, but I'm throwing the ball very well and seem to not get rewarded for good shots.  I am looking for a ball, surface prep and layout suggestions from someone who experiences this same situation.  16mph speed, 300-350 rev rate, 5 1/8 inch over 1/8inch up axis.

cheers!

for wet/dry
your looking for something with surface to help blend it and eliminate the snap.
possibly a urethane Piece like lane #1's liberator or the Visionary Urethane ogre which should be coming out soon.
Maybe even look into the Lane masters hornet which has a really high durometer rating.

Pick out a good particle piece, or a urethane piece at about 800 sheen, and you'll be good to go. That's generally the way I go to blend wet/dry.

RotoGrip has an extensive listing of balls you can choose from. Are you having trouble playing the track area, or when you move in after transition?

Is there a higher amount of volume in the fronts with stronger crisper back ends? Or is there more volume in the middle and friction to the outsides?
Also it depends on how you want to play them, straighter as opposed to opening up the lane and more so in the volume as opposed to closer to the friction.

there is a fair blend from front to back, but from side to side is very challenging.  i like to play around 12-15 at the arrows, putting the ball around 8 at the break point.  it seems every 3rd ball just blows by the breakpoint or hooks in my face.  and i'm missing by single boards, not arrows.  its pretty extreme.  I'm all about making that perfect shot, but gimme a break.  the straightys are eating it up (no offense you low rev-ers).

2 layouts I would suggest would be:

Use a solid cover and smooth surface so to be able to play more in the oil away from the friction as well as allow the ball to slow down properly. Secondly, use either:

A. 2 X 2 layout. Place the pin approx 2" from your PAP and the weight hole 2" behind the PAP. If you keep it on the line, i.e. pin to PAP, past the PAP, it will give it more back end. If you go down the VAL, it will be earlier and smoother. Better on the fresh.

B. 5 1/2" X 20-30 degree PSA/mass bias. This lay out keeps the ball on line longer with a smoother back end. Better to play staright or after the transition or breakdown.

I would second the 2" pin-pap layout. I have it on a polished Solid Uranium and that ball is by far the smoothest I've every thrown. No amount of revs will get the ball to snap like the other stuff. Great for when you need control or play inside the breakpoint on wet/dry, shorter patterns. I would recommend the layout in an instant. Any closer you will start to sacrifice angle and carry even on drier lanes. But with the Solid, the ball still carries fantastic. Give it a try...
