Whirl Wind
« on: September 14, 2006, 05:07:40 AM »
This is one strong piece.  I've always been a fan of simple cores.  They match up to me very well and it's easy to manipulate roll.  I had a Crossfire that worked really well on lighter volumes but wished it was a little stronger.  Luckily, my boy DP3 got hold of one so I was able to see how strong it really is.  Well, I decided to try it out.  Because of the simpler core and lower diff, I went with a very strong layout for me.  Pin below fingers 4.25" from axis with xhole on line through CG on VAL.  Hit with 4000grit Abralon.  It has large amount of flare but not really early which is perect.

Subbed in a house that's notorious for having a longer medium-heavy pattern with little backends.  Strong covers are normally needed to fight the oil downlane.  I've had my best look with Activator (AI, VZ and Classic).  Ball gave me a great read for all 4 games which is rare because of the breakdown in the heads and mids.  Very clean but strong arc downlane.  Ball never overread the breakdown but still recovered.  Held it's own with several Lane #1 pieces and higher end Ebonites.

Definately a ball that I will have at least one more.  At least one with a longer pin and box (or lower grit and polished), with more length and angle.  Can't go wrong considering the price.

No one seems to want to buy this one.  LOL.  You're really missing out on a solid performing piece.  Easily the best $100 dollar ball I've thrown since the Stinger 2 Piece Series.  Maybe once these guys see Tommy Jones tear it up this season with it, these things will start flying off shelves

Best $100 ball?  Try $9.99 + shipping.  I got an x-out from ebay for $34 and some change.  I have only seen them this cheap in 16lbs, but I decided to give it a try.  It ended up having about a 5" pin, which would freak some people out, but I found it to be very useable.  The top was 3 1/4oz also.  I put a 5 1/2 x 2 1/2 drill on it, and I love the reaction.  It gets great length with a nice backend, but not and over-reacting backend motion.  It is OOB currently and is very smooth off the break.  achappy, I noticed you said you wanted one with a longer pin, well I would check eBay for the X-outs like I have.  You can't beat $34 for a very nice piece.

The Whirlwind is definitly stronger than advertised.  It is easily 3-5 boards stronger off the break than the Ice's and a has a similar but different look to the hook than the Crossfire.

I drilled one up for a junior who straps on it looking for a lighter oil ball and it wound up as a great compliment for his Punisher, but nowhere near a light oil ball.  And now mom's not too happy that the kid wants another ball now. Kinda shifty way to make business but oh well, now we now.

My proshop has some of these at a really good price. I was hoping this ball would work for lanes with screaming backends. Right now I can't keep my fired up right of head pin, throwing 15 to 5. I'd rather square up and play 10 or 12 - 5. Is this ball to strong for that? I need something for screamin backends or lighter volumes.

ACHAPPY - Was surprised to see you throwing it at Laurel....but you can throw anything. Believe I spoke with you at the end of the night and you asked me about my SR300. Had a Whirlwind drilled for my son who has won about $2K in scholarship with it the past 2 months. Used it at a tournament in Reading that was 17 games and never changed balls. Great ball, especially for the money. Yesterday he used it in a sport shot tournament where they had the medium Junior Gold pattern. Ball is more versatile than you would expect.

I'd like to know this as well. According to the website, they are the same ball, the same core, the same coverstock..this must be misinformation on the website if they are two different balls.

IMO, the whirlwind is about 5-6 stronger in boards covered and it does it earlier.  I'm pretty positive the coverstock info on the page is wrong as this cover is very strong.  It's very close to a polished V2 Solid in reaction.

I'd agree with DP3.  The box for the Whirlwind states "Modified Trimax" and I seem to recall Ron Hickland say the coverstock was tweaked from the Crossfire also.

According to Ron Hickland, The crossfire is a pearl coverstock, On the Whirlwind it is a solid coverstock, modified Big Bang.  The Whirlwind is definitely stronger than the Crossfire.  I have the Whirlwind and it is stronger than the V2 Clean that I used to use.  The Whirlwind has a very similar roll to the V2.

This is the 2nd best ball ive ever seen from ebonite. Flares a lot, but not early. Very clean thru the front and hits extremely well. This is a special orb. I cant get over how good this ball is.

I agree this is a very underrated ball.Very clean through the fronts and comes around the corner pretty good.I hit mine with 4000 abralon compared the v2 its cleaner through the fronts but stronger on the back and more overall hook. Can't beat this ball for the money. This ball is stronger than my overtime also.

Ebonite is making some awesome balls right know in every price point.
