Actually, the plasticizer is what makes the urethane reactive. In Ebonite's "Ball Death" theory, it's EXCESS plasticizer that comes to the surface, getting between the ball and the lane surface, and reducing friction. I wish I remembered what makes the stuff come to the surface. Anyhow, whatever you use to clean out the ball, be it hot water, a Revivor machine, or Ebonite's own "Hook Again," you're going to be removing the excess plasticizer, and the ball will still hook.
It's one of those weird materials sciences things.
