Mission Surface Change
« on: March 02, 2010, 08:02:24 AM »
Hesitantly took my Mission to 4000 and hit it with Beans Sauce for Sunday''s league. Not a good match up in my opinion. Ball lost its midlane roll on the fresh shot, and by the second game, there was not enough head oil for the ball to finish consistently, even with the polish. By the end of the second game, I had left an 8 pin, a 9 pin and a 6 pin. Tried moving inside but the ball could not handle the oil in the middle and make the turn. Still, I carried 3 light hits that made everybody laugh.

In short, the polish at 4000 totally changes the characteristics of the ball. I should have tried 1000 or 2000 and polish. First, I will try 4000 no polish and see how the ball compares to my VG at the same surface.

Will update next week.

I bet 2000 with polish would make that guy go long and flip hard on the backend..

Really looking for a finish that will let me use the ball more than one game. Love the midlane read and strong arc. Just too much ball for our house shot OOB. May be an impossible task. If so, I am content to put it in the bag for those times when the oil machine hiccups and put out too much oil, or for the heavier patterns.

ccrider,

For whatever it's worth, it's a matter of balance, playing both ends against the middle, so to speak. I'd suggest either P1500 or P2000, with a light application of what is termed a (if possible) non-abrasive polish, as a first attempt. Then try P1000 + polish or P4000 matte (no polish). Any time you try polish, first try a very light application, then try a slightly heavier application and TEST.

I've also found the drilling goes with the finish. As a very basic example, for my release, I like a pin above the ring finger with a P4000 matte finish surface, but with a p1500 or P2000 grit polished surface, I tend to like the pin either under the ring finger or under the center of the bridge. Again, those are just examples that I've found works for me.

Good luck!

2000 with polish works great for me, plus it's one of the only balls I have that I can use almost all 3 games with that surface change. I wouldn't say that it flips extremely hard on the backend but strong enough to turn the corner.

Thanks Charlest,
Makes sense and is consistent with some of what I was thinking. With the Mission showing up so strong OOB, I just thought that 4000 polish was the place to start. Wrong. I usually have good luck with 1000 and polish (Beans, 3M, Ebonite, etc.) depending on what reaction I am looking for. You are correct, should have started lower grit.

Tell me, where are you getting P1500 from? Isn't abralon P rated also?

CC,

Both Abralon and SiaAir Velvet come in P1500 grit pads. New Abralon pads also include a P3000 grit one.

Don't forget that the good old Scotch-Brite light grey nylon pad is 800 grit US/CAMI which translates roughly to P1600 grit.

I put a medium coat of polish on my Mission before i even threw it. For me it gives a GREAT midlane read & a strong continuous backend.

Granted, i have a fairly high rev rate 400+ but i have high ball speed also 17.5ish at the deck. I have yet to have this ball skate the break point on me, but ive only bowled league with my mission so far, no tourney oil yet.

Charlest,

Thanks. Did not know Abralon was now doing 1500 and 3000. I do have wet dry paper US 800 and 1200. Never tried the scotch brite pads.

Subbed at the soup bowl last night. Took the Mission back to 2000 Abralon from the 4000 with polish. Shot a clean 236 first game. Lanes had begin to break down by the end of the first game and everyone was having carry problems.  Went 9/,9/,9/, three ten pins to start the second. Moved in 4 and 2, didn''t give the ball enough room, went through the nose 8/. Never figured out the right adjustment to kick out the 10 pin. I was convinced that the ball was losing too much energy in the front part of the lane, so I went with my VG 4000 polished and finished the second and third games.

On the heavy shot, this ball OOB is the ticket. Once the heads begin to break down, unless you are comfortable moving deep inside, which is what I should have done last night, I think you have to put the Mission at 2000 no polish up as this ball needs oil up front to show its true colors. There are some guys in our league that I have observed struggling terribly trying to play with the Mission OOB all three games.

I will try 1000 with Beans Sauce next. This combination works on pretty much any ball for me, so I expect stellar results with the Mission.
