For whatever it's worth, it's a matter of balance, playing both ends against the middle, so to speak. I'd suggest either P1500 or P2000, with a light application of what is termed a (if possible) non-abrasive polish, as a first attempt. Then try P1000 + polish or P4000 matte (no polish). Any time you try polish, first try a very light application, then try a slightly heavier application and TEST.
I've also found the drilling goes with the finish. As a very basic example, for my release, I like a pin above the ring finger with a P4000 matte finish surface, but with a p1500 or P2000 grit polished surface, I tend to like the pin either under the ring finger or under the center of the bridge. Again, those are just examples that I've found works for me.
