My New Playmaker Got Beat-Up Today
« on: August 14, 2008, 12:55:58 PM »
Geez...I can only afford 3 new balls or so a year and my new Playmaker looks like it is a year old after only 4 games and 2 frames on it.

I got it drilled Tuesday and rolled 3 games trying it out. The lanes were like a desert, so I couldn't do much with it since it started hooking just past the arrows that day, so I quit after 3 games.

A group of us seniors always get together every Thursday for 3 pot games. Today when I got up to bowl in the 3rd frame of the second game, my Playmaker was missing. Then some of the other bowlers noticed their balls were missing also, so we called the lane man about the problem. He went back and found 6 balls humg up in the back. Two were mine...Playmaker and XXXL. Both came back damaged. They were the only balls of the 6 that got damaged. The brand new Playmaker had a deep gouge about 2 1/2" long x 1 1/4" wide x 1/8"  deep ........ the XXXL had 2 rows of notches 1/4" long x 1/8" wide x 1/16" deep  about 1/2" apart with a space of about 2" between the two rows all around the entire circumference of the ball.

To fix the XXXL, they will have to sand off at least 1/16" of the entire cover.

To fix the new Playmaker, they are going to have to plug it and the worse part about this is the damage is in the ball track. Pretty upsetting to see this happen to a brand new ball. I showed the manager that the damage to Playmaker is in the track and he said that's OK, it won't hurt the balls performance, happens sometimes.

My question is....will a plugged area this large in the track effect the ball?

But plugging is urethane, not resin.
If it's 2 1/2" long x 1 1/4" wide, that's a pretty wide gouge.
If it is all in the track area, how can it not affect performance?
But by how much? I don't really know, but I'd want more corroboration than from the manager.

I think the manager is just placating you so he doesn't have to pay for a new ball AND drilling. Yes, it happens sometimes but not that big and not all in your track, if that's accurate.

But, Jim, I'm not a driller wait til one of the drillers here tells you the percentage of urethane won't seriously affect the ball's performance.

I bowl with this guy that use to have a Piranha back in the day and it had like a 1 inch or 1 1/2 inch gouge right in his track line and some guy said you're not gonna be able to use that so of course that night he shoots 300 with it right in his track and whomever that guy was must have felt stupid.

Brickguy, sorry to hear about your ball.  That really sucks when that happens, I had it happen to a Chaos many years ago right in my track, it never rolled the same.

Look at it on the bright side, tell them to chip around the whole track, then plug the whole thing.  Then you would have a homemade version of the Quantum Helix!

Something similar to that happened to a friend of mine... Ball never reacted the same, they sanded it down ALOT and you could see and hear the flat spot. I recommend asking the manager to replace it.

Jeff, you are correct. I knew before I showed the ball to him or the pro shop driller that I wouldn't get a replacement ball as this manager has a reputation for refusing to replace damaged balls and the pro shop driller always goes a long with what the manager wants to do. It's going to take a ton of sanding to get all of the marks out of my XXXL plus it will be smaller when I get it bback. Generally, this house does a pretty fair job of maintaining equipment when compared to other houses in this area, but these 2 balls makes it 3 balls that I have had damaged in this house this summer. The other was my Heist, but it wasn't as bad as either of these two today and I was able to sand the damage out of it myself.

Hey Jim, which house did this happen at?

Six, it happened at Heritage Lanes. I don't bowl at Blvd anymore. Haven't bowled there for a bit over 2 years. I told Donnie today that this is the 3rd ball this summer that has gotten damaged and I guess that I need to start bowling at Blvd if my balls are going to keep getting damaged because I wouldn't have to drive as far to get them damaged as Blvd is 6 miles and 12-15 minutes closer to my house.

I bought the ball from Donnie. I guess I should have bought it from Anne Marie as I think she would go to bat and fight for me. The reason I bought it from Donnie is because his drilling accuracy on span and pitches is way better than Anne Marie's.

there's 2 houses in my area, I bowl at our 24 lane AMF center and the other center is a Brunswick Zone with 40. I know alot of people who have had balls cracked, gouged, or split in half from the Brunswick.

I still dont get how it happens, the most I've had was when ball got stuck during return back and got scratches from the belt.

LMAO....Maine,  back in the days of the Quantums, I loved them and bought more than my share of them, but the problem there is that I didn't like the Helix. I really didn't.

Just make sure the plug is grinded down 100% perfect! I had plugwork on my track and it was not good work and the ball bumped down the lane... very annoying... sold it.

Grayson....that is another one of my fears of which I pointed out to the pro shop guy yesterday.

Sanding a 1/16th of an inch off the surface (=1/8" over the whole diameter) will cause the ball to be illegal in size, no?

The rules state that the diameter must be 8.500" to 8.595" in diameter. Assuming that the ball is 8.595" (the max.) to start with, then 8.595" - .125" = 8.470" ... too small by the rules. They have created an illegal ball. This should be sufficient justification to get you a new ball based on the repairs required to fix the damage.

I got my Playmaker back this afternoon. The driller did a remarkable job of repairing it and if you didn't know where the damage was, you would never notice it. I'm sure the color of the ball helps hide the damage, but still, my driller did an A-1 repair job.

I threw the ball for 3 games on a used condition that still had some but not a lot of oil in the heads and some but not a lot of carrydown and when this ball sniffed the dry, it made it's move and arced strongly to the pocket on thru the pin deck and never showing the slightest sign of quitting, so it looks like the ball may be OK. I shot 180-212-202 with it and missing 5 ten pins in the 3 games. I always use my XXXL for them and it is still in the shop being repaired from the damage last Thursday.

I love the type of length this ball gives me and it's really strong back-end. I need to throw it a couple more times, but from a perliminary stand point, I think this ball could be an excellent match-up to my style and could possibly become the "first ball out of my bag". For a pearl ball, this ball seems really strong at this point. From the varing conditions I have thrown it on thus far, I think I will be able to make a final determintion of just how good it is for me after the first day of our fall league this coming Tuesday.
