GBV 12.7 cracking
« on: August 14, 2008, 08:31:39 AM »
Well, I drilled up a raid about 2 weeks ago and loved the reaction.  Threw it almost exclusively in a regional tournament for about 20 games, that was about it.  Then I decided to bowl a local sweeper last week, went to get my stuff out the back office and bam, my raid has split about 5 inches from the thumb out towards my axis.  I was upset, but luckily I sent it off to ebonite and they gave me store credit at our local shop.  Can't be too upset I guess.

Well disaster stuck again yesterday.  My angular one sitting at my house (raid was at the bowling alley) split from the weight hole all the way around the entire ball.  This ball I had for almost a full year and never noticed anything.  Hopefully I can send it off to ebonite as well.

I'm assuming its just a bad coincidence but I was wondering if anyone else had problems with this particular cover cracking.

My shop hasn't had many of these come back because of cracking (only 1 Raid that I can think of). If you use grips or a thumb insert, the super glue will make the cover brittle and prone to cracking around or out from the inserts.
If you have your holes drilled with too much pitch either way can also cause areas to crack around and out from the holes. The other problem is temperature extremes. If you had your stuff out in your hot or cold car and brought them in and placed them next to a heating or A/C duct the difference in environments could also cause the cover to crack usually from one of the holes around the circumference of the ball.
