XXXcel vs. The One

I've suddenly got the itch to buy a new bowling ball, and I can't make a decision between 3 of them. The two Ebonites being XXXcel and The One, and Storm's Paradigm. I'm a tweener with medium rpms, and between 30 and 60 rotation. If I said all of that right. I consider myself intermediate averaging just over 150. The house I bowl in has medium heavy oil. Which of the 3 balls would most of you recommend, and how would suggest getting it drilled for the strongest backend "snap".

Lets start off by saying that ive seen all three of these balls in action. To be perfectly honest...the Paradigm is really not as good as advertised. The One from ebonite as well as teh XXXcel are both better options BY FAR (IMO of course).

You have a med-heavy condition. That is waht the One is designed for, and the XXXcel is more of the Heavy shot. But seeing as you arent a cranker, either would work. The XXXCEl would be all around stronger than the One no matter how you drill it. That dosnt mean that it will hook more. The One has a much more defined Backend Move, for thats what its designed for. I personally would recomend for you that u get the XXXCel because it is more even rolling, not as flippy, and would be able to give you a good STRONG arc in oil and a bit more snap in leser than med-heavy. You cant go wrong with either, but depending on the length of your shot, the One might skid too far on longer volumes. Now you dont have to listen to me, but i would say go for the XXXCel.

In my pro shop we arent selling many XXXCel's because the One is the hot seller right now. Again, i emphasize that BOTH are great balls, but i feel that a better all around ball is the XXXcel for its smoother, stronger, and just would be a better ball for you. Just a side note, you prob will need a light coat of polish on the XXXCel.

I have not seen the "One", but a team mate has in another town ( he uses a Hawg). I have a XXXcel, XXcel and Xcel and according to him, the XXXcel is better on heavy and just as good on med/heavy oil. He thinks the Storm also is over rated, but that's just his opinion.

I'm a hard core Ebonite/Hammer guy, so my opinion would be biased, but it's hard to go wrong with the XXXcel, IMO.

Agreed with trimman, I have seen customers throwing all 3 and would actually rate the XXcel best of the bunch on med-heavy. If you want snap unless you have a ton of head oil or drill the guts out of it I wouldn't use the XXXcel. I haven't heard of how people are doing by taking the ones surface down to like 1000 or 1500 then I might be willing to suggest that but at 4000 I might believe a bit squirty on med/heavy. The Storm ball I put in the same category as the One, a bit long.  Again all this is relative to what one considers medium or medium heavy.

With The One's surface at 4000 it just skates in oil.  I took it down to 100 and the ball still skids on medium/heavy oil.  If the one can't find a dry spot, it has a hard time turing the corner.  But as the backends start drying out of if you start with really strong backends then The One is great.  The One does need at least medium oil to get through the heads.

If I were bowling on medium/heavy conditions, I think the XXXcel is tremendous.  Best oil ball I've owned.  But when the oil starts to dry up and you don't have the medium/heavy oil, the XXXcel will burn up.  But you can follow the oil.  The ball plays well down and in or swinging the ball.  As long as there is enough oil to get the ball down the lane and still retain some energy.

I don't much care for The One.  I said it before that The One reminds me of the EMB.  Not driller friendly, release is critical to even being relatively consistent and it is not a very forgiving ball.

But that's my opinion.  I might think to save a little money and get the Big Time Sanded and the Big Time Pearl.  For just an extra couple bucks you can have an oil ball and a medium transitional ball.  And the Big Time Sanded is a great ball, even with a little compound or polish.

In reference to the guy who suggests a plastic ball until I average 180 with it. Consider that I bowled with a guy in a tournament with a 212 average who didn't break 170 with a plastic house ball.

Greg, thanks for the info. I'm starting to think that maybe the xxcel would be superior to the xxxcel, but then I wonder how similar the xxcel is to my Apex obsession. :-/

Since you opened it up for the XXcel, I will say this...IMO, the XXcel is a super ball. I can read most anything with it. For me, it's my 1st and probably easiest to read ball I own. I have seen some 'soup' that it didn't do as well on as the XXXcel, but if I can get the brain to remember to slow it down, I do get a better reaction from it.

Keep in mind, I'm NOT pro quality, never will be, but I enjoy the game and , as my wife says, it'll be easier to bury me with my ball than pry it out of my hand, so take what I say with that in mind.

IMO, the XXcel would be a super ball for you.

What vols was saying was to raise your average to 180 the quickest way is to get a ball that goes straight and work on your spare game first.
The biggest difference between a 180 bowler and a 150 bowler is spare conversions.
A good spare game = ball control and plastic tracks the straightest.
Regardless of what ball you choose that is solid advice.


I have the XXXcel and find it to be very effective on fresh oil and clean back ends.The ball is drilled aggressive because it is an aggressive ball.I cannot use the ball for a complete set on a THS as this ball needs oil or the entry angle becomes too sharp as the lanes transition and the corners start to stand.I tried polishing the ball to combat this and was very unhappy with the look it gave me.

If your having trouble getting to the pocket in fresh oil the XXXcel is a good choice but if your looking for a smooth arcing ball that starts up easily and can cover a variety of conditions a better choice might be the Track Solution Solid.This ball uses a modified Elite core and the cover from the Animal Untamed to create a very effective result on THS.

i have seen both balls in action I would recomend the One. The reason why is because I think the one will have a better back end move then the XXXcel.. I have a XXcel and I love it but I rather have a one for especially for the back end motion then the XXXcel

Thank you all for your opinions. I have come to think that there isn't enough oil on the lanes for an XXXcel ball, and at the advice of a few of you have just purchased a used (5 games) XXcel ball for $60.00 shipped. I'll be keeping an eye out for a used The One around that price range, nearly impossible I know, but I did see one go for $55.00 here not too long ago.
