GAMEBREAKER- Carry Issues?
« on: December 05, 2007, 05:21:01 AM »
I recently traded for a very low games gamebreaker.  Ball is drilled pin high with about a 3 inch pin to pap with the cg stacked and also about 3 inches from pap with no x-hole.

Ball is very readable and seems to be pretty strong, exhibiting great skid/roll transition.  Able to hit the pocket pretty hard from several angles with it.

I have only thrown it for two sets (6 games), but it doesn't seem to want to carry as well as it appears that it should.  It looks to be entering the pocket at a good angle and is not burning up or rolling out, but just seems to leave pins on hits that look good.

It isn't always the same pin, although quite a few of them are 10 pins, I would have to say that between 10's and 4's, it is a 65%-35% mix.

The tens always seem to be hard wraps and the fours will try to trip out, but don't very often.

One thing I am wondering is this:  Would adding an x-hole change the angle of entry significantly enough to have an effect on the carry?  Right now I LOVE the read I am getting, just wishing it had a higher strike ratio and wondered if I could influence the reaction enough by just adding either a flare reducing or a flare increasing x-hole?

I had the same problem with the Gamebreaker I had.. 10 pins out the wazoo.. I tried changing the surface and that didn't help so I sold it..

Also, the drilling I had on mine is very close to the drilling you have on yours..

Not saying this isn't a good ball, it just wans't for me..

Jkiser ( and others),

Yea, I forgot to add that it has just a touch of polish over the factory finish.  Not really shiny, but just enough to take the "matte" finish look off it.

Like I said, really love the look, just working on the carry.....

I had the ball for about 10 games. It sucked for me as well. Even on the right shot it carried like garbage. 10 pin leaving machine. Left it on the rack at the center for houseball use. Waste of $90.00.

That's a shame because you couldn't pry either of mine out of my hands. One of the best balls i've owned in a long while.

Edit: Mine leaves 10Pins too;

Leaving 10 pins and 4 pins is usually (but not always) a problem of too strong a drill - probably needs just a slightly longer pin-PAP or inaccuracy in targeting or release consistency. Choose your poison.

I have 4 Gamebreakers and have no carry issues. 2-4"pin to pap, one 5", one 6".
This is a very early rolling ball, I would suggest that the 3"pin to pap is too close, but this is just a guess without seeing you roll it.

The ball was already drilled up and VERY close to my fit, so I wanted to just try it like it was and hope that I might just be able to adjust the cover and use an x-hole to develop a little different look and see what happens.

I wasn't thinking that the pin-to-pap was too close because it has the SWEETEST roll pattern and looks to be pounding the rack, but it may be.

I guess if I don't get enough results from cover changes, I may go ahead and try an x-hole of some type.  If that doesn't work, I guess I'll plug it up and re-drill with a different longer pin-to-pap drilling. sigh............

mine is drilled 4x3 for my pap, and the ball is AWESOME, the only time i experience carry issues is actually when the lanes are fresh and the ball has TOO MUCH entry angle, the ball is great for me all around but i actually like it when the lanes have some carrydown...

UPDATE!

Went to the lanew early for Thursdays league session and took the ball into the shop for a checkup.

Upon weighing for static weights, I found that the ball was between 7/8 oz and 1 oz positive sideweight and 3/8 oz finger with about 2 oz of topweight.

I put a 1/2 inch hole 1 inch deep at a 90 degree angle 4 1/2 inchesfrom grip center and added a coat of polish.

Results are great.  Carry has gone way up and so has predictability.  If this keeps up, I am so gonna love this ball.

O.K., it is official, the carry questions have been answered!  Since adding the polish and adjusting the sideweight issue, I have been bowling well with around a 75% carry ratio.

This has GOT to be the smoothest, most predictable ball motion I can remember seeing in a LONG time.  Ball LOVES to be rolled ( odd, considering the low rg balls usually like more sideturn for me ) and will hit hard with little deflection when delivered properly.

So far have shot 667-675-642-719 with it.  Now, how long can I expect this coverstock to last?  I clean it after every set, just wondering when I will have to have it rejuvenated?  Will it last longer if I keep it polished VS dulled?

GB covers seem to last longer polished, but you still need to keep them clean.

Since most people say that static weights have very-very little effect on a ball nowdays, I would guess that it was the hole you punched in the ball which probably changed the flare, thus matching it up to you better and not the removal of the side weight.

This is what I was thinking when I put the hole in.  I had trouble deciding whether to reduce or increase the flare, but since the ball was an early rolling type of ball to begin with, I put a reduction hole in it to help it save more energy for the backends.

It seems to have worked.  The ball has come alive in a big way.  Thinking about increasing the size of the x-hole from 3/8ths ( was supposed to be 1/2 ) to 3/4 to reduce flare even more, and conserve energy better, but things is so danged smooth, I'm afraid to mess with it anymore!
