NVD
« on: March 13, 2009, 02:29:17 PM »
Hello,

I want to take a moment to share my experience of throwing a ball that is nothing short of amazing - the Ebonite NVD. My 15 pounder came with a 2-3 inch pin and 2 1/2 top weight. I'm a left-handed tweener with a rev rate of about 300 and average ball speed of 16-16.5 m.p.h. My P.A.P. is 5 1/8 over and 1/4 up.

I laid the NVD out with a standard 5 1/2 inch pin placement (pin above and between the fingers) and placed the mass bias at 55 degrees. I needed a ball (for league at Bowl America Glen Burnie) that would get around the oil on a 40 ft. medium-heavy THS with carried down backends. I had been using a medium dull particle (XXCel with a 2000 finish) with some success, but had difficulty keeping the ball from burning up during the last half of the set. I drilled the NVD with the thought of achieving the mid lane strength of the particle, but an overall cleaner and more continuous reaction throughout the entire set. I was not disappointed!!

I drilled the ball at the Glen Burnie Pro Shop on Monday, March 2, then practiced three games at Bowl America with the ball in an OOB finish. I saw immediately that the NVD read the lane a little earlier than I wanted, but definitely had the midlane and continuation I was looking for. I went back to the pro shop and applied polish before bowling league the next evening.

The next night I rolled a 772 series with a 300 in game two. I normally stand 23-25, play a 12 to 8 angle with the XXCel. With the NVD I was able to get 5 boards deeper with my feet; yet the ball didn't labor in the oil. The Spike -  Version 1A core and Traxion reactive .048 cover is amazing technology for a medium to heavier oil condition. Additionally, the polish allowed the ball to strengthen in reaction off the spot. Happily I can report that the NVD responded well on the USBC National pattern as well.

I would recommend the NVD to anyone looking for a heavy rolling ball with strong midlane and unrelenting backend reaction.

The ball is quickly becoming my favorite as well. I'm surprised about 2 things:

1. that more people don't have them
2. that ebonite discontinued them so quickly so that they could release that POS the Suck@$$ Motion.

I'm going to post my review of the NVD this weekend, I just haven't had the chance to do that yet. I haven't had a whole lot of success with Ebonite's high performance balls but the NVD is definitely becoming one of my favorite balls of all time. When the Total NV first came out I saw a ton of bowlers had that ball but hardly seen anyone throw any of the other ones in that line.

One thing I love about the NVD is that it takes surface adjustment very well even though it's hard to keep using it all 3 games when the oil starts to disappear. Another reason is that it hits hard, VERY HARD and it has alot of room for error even if you miss right a little. In my area many bowlers perfer Hammer, Brunswick and Storm, I feel that they are missing out on something really good.

I agree, this ball is awesome. Out of the box, wow, way too strong for league stuff around my area. I hit it with a 2000 pad, polished it, and holy cow, that was the trick for league.
I'm headed to Vegas for Nationals, so I hit it with a grey scotch brite pad, just to get the polish off. I'm hoping this is the ball for me in the team event, we'll see. Team has sadly been my weakest event in Nationals, and this time, I really have confidence in my game, but you know, got to bring my brain to the lanes as well...
This is my first Ebonite since the Predator, I am impressed- why did they discontinue this, I'll never know.

I didn't find much use with the NVD at all, but the  magic is the truth, its a longer stronger nvd.

Ask anyone that has thrown both, just because your friend had a bad outing with the magic, doesn't take away the truth!

My opinions are based on experience, I have personally thrown both. You... not so much, you haven't ever even thrown the magic, so how can you state something that you have not experienced for yourself. If you actually would have thrown it, and say that, then its fact.. but seeing someone throw ball x and ball z, then your throwing ball y, how is that a even comparison? I didn't say I didn't like the nvd, but you can contact ebonite directly, and they will tell you, the nvd is not as strong as the magic, period, but that is not saying the nvd isn't a good ball. I do however know of at least 15 bowlers that owned the NVD for less then a weak before selling it saying it was garbage. It just depends on the bowler, can we agree on that point?
