Help with a ball purchase for gift
« on: November 23, 2004, 05:05:06 AM »
Hello!

My husband has a yearning to try out Ebonite.  Since I've made clear to him since June that Santa WILL bring me a Ravage for Christmas, I suppose it's only fair that I help fill his request.  Since I know next to nothing about Ebonite, I'm here for advice and suggestions.

A little background.  Hubby is a medium-speed intermediate-level bowler.  He has tweener tendencies, but is working on a free armswing and a stroker delivery.  His favorite target is anywhere from 7 to 13 without much swing, but he can play anywhere from 2 to 25 depending on the oil pattern.

What he owns ...

Storm La Nina
Storm Power Charge Pearl
Storm Spare Storm
Columbia Icon
Brunswick Raging Inferno
Various stuff ready to be donated to my junior league players

He has a lot of arcing stuff and would like to try something with more of a go long and snap at the back end.  Most of his stuff also has the big hook, and is too strong for anything less than medium-heavy conditions.  (The Power Charge Pearl being the exception.)  So, any suggestions for something from the Ebonite line for light to medium conditions with that nice long roll and snap at the back?  Thanks in advance for all suggestions.

Deb

I would like to recommend the Ice is has a simple yet effective core with a pearlized trimax coverstock which had been long proven as part of the V2.  It is easy on your pocket and rolls great for everyone from pro's to beginners.  My local shop has been selling them in cases I bet he has sold 20 or 30 since its realease.  It has great length with a lot of backend.  It is also a great looking ball and to some peope that makes a difference.  Nothing against the fire and it is longer due to a weaker cover but loses a lot in the core area and for the same price you get twice as much ball with the Ice.

I should just quit bowling, oh wait I already tried that.
Now that I am back and my Saws are sharp again, I am ready to cut some wood.

I'll second the V2 Clean, and I'll throw the V2 Sweet and Killer Instinct Pearl into the equation. The pearlized covers and strong cores should allow either of those to produce the long and strong reaction you're looking for.

What about one of the xcel's when they come out?  Maybe the reactive one if he doesn't see a ton of oil...

Wow!  Thanks for all the suggestions so far!

Question:  How about the Show Time Pearl or the Game Time Pearl?  A pro shop operator who watched my husband throw a few frames said he wasn't sure, but he was leaning towards recommending one of the V2s or something like the Show Time or Game Time.  Anyone thrown either of these balls who can give a little bit of insight?

Forget the Ebonite --- get him a few Titleists and start him playing golf; he'll frustrate the h-ll out of himself w/this bowling thing........lol

p.s. nice post on hubby's game -- it's apparent you understand a few things about the game (I'd hate to run up against you two in a couples league!!)

So you like this guy????
Yeah, he treats me sweet -- I met him at a bowling alley.         (Matchstick Men)

Just thought I'd update you all about my decision.  After doing a lot of reading, I narrowed it down to the Show Time Pearl or the Ice.  A call to the pro shop was in order.  After several attempts, I finally got to speak with the pro who has given my husband a lesson or two.  He told me either ball would be a good choice.  So I asked which one he'd recommend, and he picked the Ice.  He also happens to throw the Ice, so that was even better.

I ordered it, and it arrived today.  Now for the yuck part.  I headed to town early today, and my husband decided to take the day off of work.  Before I could get to the pro shop, the guy called the house and told hubby that the ball had arrived.  Since hub's pretty smart, he was able to add 2 and 2, and now there's no surprise under the Christmas tree.  <sigh>  Ah, well.  It's the thought that counts, right?

The Ice is a great ball for medium to light. That is what I use currently, and I love how it reacts. Not to strong of a break, but it certainly does come back. Nice arching back-end hook. My high game with it is a 269, and I've only bowled about 12 games or so. I average around 197.
