Maintaining a TNV
« on: March 23, 2007, 03:15:00 AM »
Hi guys I just got myself a TNV and I must say that it is a good ball. I am still rather new to bowling ans also this is my first Ebonite ball so I would like to have some pointers from you guys here. Currently I wipe the ball with micro-fabric clothes after every frame and when I go home I would clean it with the Ebonite Extender Ball Polish. Anyone can enlighten me whether this is a good way to maintain the TNV? Thanks.

I see but I have been using that polish to "clean" the ball for the pass few times with ard 30 games on it. So would it affect the ball since it is not a cleaner after all?

I wouldn't worry.  Using the microfiber towel before every shot is the most important part of maintaining a ball.  I would say cleaning afterwards with a cleaner is only a minor part.  I would buy some energizer cleaner and use it from now on and forget about the extender polish.

So there would not be any negative effect due to improper cleaning? Think that I will invest in the ebonite cleaner the next time I visit the bowling alley. Thanks. BTW one last question is there any specific solution to use to clean the microfabric clothes or any detergent would do the job.

Again, I think we are nitpicking at this point.  You use microfiber between shots and that is 90 percent.  You have maintained well so far and it would be optimal to use the engergizer cleaner instead.  The microfiber towel can be washed with normal detergent.

I would give the ball a hot water bath at about 50 games, or if you see a loss in reaction.

Thanks. I have read over the web that using alcohol can also clean the ball. Is that true?

You will be fine, most of the whole "dying" thing you hear about is just the hatred to the company. I personally have had no problems with any balls dying, etc. I don't clean them at the bowling alley, I simply just clean them when I get home.

I agree with this.  I maintain my stuff and have put hundreds of games on balls (mainly Brunswick, known for coverstock life) and don't notice any lack in reaction.  Most people complaining of this don't maintain their bowling balls.  I have a friend who never cleans his stuff, for example.

As for the guy asking the main question, after bowling just spray your ball with a typical ball cleaner.  Anything that's basically glorified Windex does the trick.  Wipe your ball between shots and spray it with ball cleaner and wipe it down after a night of bowling and you'll be fine.  Get it resurfaced after a couple hundred games.  Maybe bathe it after a 100 or so games if you feel it necessary.

RE: the alcohol issue to clarify ... Yes alcohol will clean, but not advisable since it may affect the coverstock.  In the case of denatured alcohol ... it might damage the coverstock.

The extender polish is NOT a cleaner.  It is a polish used when you want to get lenght.  Ebonite advises to use the factory finish polish afterwards to get bite again.

My personal tip: just spray a bit of the energizer clearner on your towel.  Wipe after every shot.  I have balls that have 4000+ games on them and they still hook.

If you want to do the hot water bath, do it only when you notice a loss in performance.

Look into Neo-tac (?) products also for a higher level of cleaning (every few months or so ..-)
