Image or Performance sells balls?
« on: July 28, 2003, 11:52:10 PM »
In all honesty do u think image or performance sells balls.  Today most bowlers probably throw Storm since it is the #1 High Performance Ball Company and to me they have an image that matches the younger / tournament bowler.  Ebonite is perceived as older and Columbia is like IBM.

What do  you think?

I believe in my area it is image that sells the ball first, the performance.  People see others scoring well with Storm and Ebonite, so they fell that it will help them score as well.  Little do they know most of the bowlers using Storm or Ebonite could probably score with other equipment also.  For me, I choose my equipment from a performance aspect, not following the image of big name companies.  To me AZO and Visionary are as good as the big boys IF NOT BETTER than them.  Around here, most people never even heard of AZO before, and think because it isn't advertised or marketed well, it sucks.

They don't know what they're missing....................but good for me!!!

There's a quote that escaped from the Marketing types a while back that seems appropriate to this subject:

"No one ever got poor underestimating the intelligence of the American Buying public."

implying, of course, that image, and not actual performance, is (virtually) everything.

If the performance of the ball matches my game then that is where my money goes. Image doesn't matter on the as long as the ball will clear the deck!
