Pin,CG,MB not inline on Big One
« on: March 07, 2006, 06:48:05 AM »
Is this normal? The CG is a little over 3/4" right of being inline with pin and MB. Is the CG just marked wrong? Here is a pic.

Not unusual by any means, for the CG to be offline to the right or left of the pin-MB line.  In fact, if you're right handed and the CG is far enough left, you can kick out the MB and not need a weighthole.

VERY SELDON ARE THEY IN LINE,  IF YOUR A RIGHT HANDED BOWLER AND THE MB IS OFF TO THE RIGHT, DEPENDING ON HOW FAR AND HOW MUCH TOP WEIGHT THE BALL HAS,  YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO DRILL THE BALL WITH A STRONG MB AND NO WEIGHT HOLE. BALLS LIKE THIS SEEM TO BE VERY POPULAR WITH BOWLERS WHO LIKE STRONGER MB DRILLINGS
BUT DON'T WANT A BAL. HOLE.  BUT THIS IS VERY NORMAL TO SEE BALLS WITH THE PIN AND MB NOT IN LINE WITH THE CG.  YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL IF YOUR BALL IS OFF TOO FAR LEFT, AND YOUR A RIGHT HANDED BOWLER,  SOMETIMES THE STRONG MB DRILLINGS CAN'T BE DONE BECAUSE ENOUGH WEIGHT CAN NOT BE REMOVED TO BRING THE BALL UNDER 1 ONCE.  IN THOSE CASES THAT BALL WILL SUIT A LEFT HANDED BOWLER.
BUT 3/4 OFF IS NOT BAD AT ALL.  YOUR BALL SHOULD BE FINE.

It's typical.  That's not even a large difference.  The only time you run into trouble with stuff like that is if the CG is far out of line to the right of the pin/MB line, more than an inch and a half (which I've seen), you may be very limited in MB placements at still keep statics ok.  A friend has an Animal Untamed with the CG left of the pin/MB line.  Going with the pin/CG placement, it's almost a label leverage drill, but the MB is practically on the VAL.

For a lefty, it's perfect, because they can put the MB anywhere they want to and almost never have trouble with statics.  Since the whole point of an asymmetric ball is to allow the MB placement to fine-tune the reaction, getting one with a wonky CG placement is not great.  You should have no trouble unless your top weight is stupidly high and you want the MB on the VAL.

Will almost certainly need a balance hole if you put the MB right of the thumb unless the pin is on the negative side of the ball.  But most balls would anyway.  I don't see it being a problem.

Thanks...now I have a drilling question. I am reading the drilling instuctions and want a reaction between layout #2 and layout #3. Would I be safe to go in between both for pin placement of 4"? If so, now where would I put the MB? Here is the link to the layouts on ebonites site.

It would be luck if they were truly in line. High MB balls tend to be carefully weighted and marked since their weight position influences ball reaction so much. The simple rule "put a 6 1/4" line from pin through CG and you have the MB position does not work well on balls like the Xcels or the Ones - too much error margin.

I have an XXcel, and its markings are also not in line: the CG is shifted towards the grip center, so that I could set the MB in a 75° position from PAP without an X-hole.

Don't worry about it.
