polishing my overtime

so im not quite sure what to do first, should i sand it down, and to what. Someone told me that's what you should do first then polish it. When i got it drilled  my coach wanted it polished and it's a monster but yesterday i put maybe 15 games on it, and i want to clean and put some fresh polish on it next wed for league but not quite sure of the EXACT process. Anyone help pleze.

I could be wrong but I heard this:

Sand to 600 then polish. I havnt gotten to that experimental stage just yet but thats what I heard most do.
