Primal Instinct: A Boat Anchor or a Decent Ball?
« on: June 22, 2005, 06:55:44 AM »
Since I've heard vastly different opinions on the review section, I figured I'd take it out here. I know the ball didn't live up to its specs and all, but what did you like or didn't like about this ball. I'm pretty much looking for a medium to medium-heavy oil ball that can be smooth and predictable off the dry. How about it?

Dunno about the primal but the killer instinct balls are boat anchors.

It's not a ball that really did what Ebonite designed it for unfortunately.  More than a few people were disappointed with it once they realized that it wasn't going to fit where they thought it would in their arsenals.

For example...  BTM gave the PI a 44 hook rating.  They gave the Prime Time Sanded a hook rating of 48.

It's longer than both Killer Instincts, but has a little more backend.

When I read all the reviews, they said it was great for over/under type shots. That's what I'm looking for, a strongish medium/heavy ball that can start up early and sort of tame down the backend I've been seeing with  my UI in the local tournies. Does anyone else think this ball is like that or should I look elsewhere?

the primal instinct is great for over under shots, mine is a really smooth rolling ball and it does the same thing every time  not one of thses over under balls when the lanes get  ugly...

if ur lookin for a ball to hook the whole lane  rthis isnt the ball u want, buit if u want a ball to play most up the boards with a really consistant rolling reaction, this ball u will like......

Yeah, that's what I've heard. It's not gonna cover a lot of boards fast. But that's what I want, the less the merrier. I just think everybody s it because it did not live up to what it was supposed to be. Brian Green, how did you have yours drilled?

Anybody elses input would be appreciated also.

Isn't that ball discontinued?  Unless you are getting a really good deal on it, I would think you might want to try something that doesn't have so many mixed reviews.  I mean its pretty much the same with any ball - you have a 50/50 shot that it will work for you, but you would be going into already knowing that so many people think the ball doesn't live up to its hype.

I would think maybe something from the Xcel line, or maybe something from Hammer.  Can't really give you much advice because I use my Nemesis for pretty much every condition (but I have it drilled 2E for a smooth, early arc), and my style seems to match up better with the mid-priced symmetric balls for some reason.

I've tried numerous Ebonite balls and I've loved the reaction out of all of them. So naturally, I saw this ball, though discontinued, and thought it fit the gap I'm tryin to fill.

I don't blame you - I loved my Savage Flip, and most of the balls I threw during an Ebonite Demo Day were great.  Have you looked at the Ball Selector on Ebonite's site to see what they recommend? http://www.ebonite.com/techcenter/04ballselect/index.php

What weight do you throw?  I have an Apex Obsession with about 15-20 games on it (does have some small nicks due to a malfunctioning ball return the first night I used it in leagues) - wife says I have too many balls, and I haven't thrown it since I got the Nemesis.  Might be willing to entertain an offer.

I use 14lbs. Does the Obsession have a smooth breakpoint or at least real controllable in medium/heavy with fairly strong backends?

I think so - I haven't used it since January (my league started playing around with the oil and for a while they were laying down pretty heavy - bought the Obsession and then they started laying down a much lighter pattern).  It's drilled per drilling #1 on the instruction sheet (http://www.dipspit.com/qstick777/apex-obsession-sheet3.PDF) which says:
quote:
Reaction: Medium length, smoother breakpoint, continuous arc

Suitable for: Medium oil, dry backends, drier outsides, slower ball speeds, higher RPM players

At the time I was carrying a 155 avg and shot a 613 series with the ball, so I was really happy with it, just don't see enough oil now to ever have a reason to put it back in the bag.

Gstick77, are you looking to get rid of it? If so how much? I've got some 14lb stuff I dont use like the V2 Clean and Tornado Lt. Blue/Violet. Both are in good condition having a few minor scratches in them. You said your house is putting down lighter patterns, both these balls are great for that. If you want I could trade these balls plus pitch in a bit of cash. Let meknow

I would trade you for the V2 Clean - I don't think you really need to trade 2 for 1 (unless you really want to get rid of the balls, but that is entirely up to you!).

PM me and we can work something out.  Pre-drill specs on the ball were 14lb 0oz, 2 1/2 top weight, and 2-3" pin, and my span info is in my profile.  It is drilled for inserts, but I may want to take the inserts out unless you need them.
