Quality of latest releases?
« on: January 24, 2007, 01:02:30 AM »
Hey all, a while back I posted a somewhat lengthy review of the Ebonite demo day here in Sacramento.  At the time, the latest release was the infinite one with the angular one coming out later that month.  I was impressed with the equipment that day, but the only thing that bothered me was peoples complaints with the "One" line dying out after a while producing a whole bunch of straight ones.

Well, the Angular One and Total NV have really caught my eye and I've been dying to try one of these as I havent bought any Ebonite yet.  Can anyone update me on the quality of the latest releases by Ebonote?  There's a whole bunch I wanna try including the Smash Time Pearl and SRX300.

I have no problem with any coverstocks on my equipment.  Please, please clean your equipment with Powerhouse Energizer cleaner after every bowling session.  Some of my favorite balls in my arsenal are my original Ones.  Cleaning them every session maintains the balls at their highest performance.

jeff,

I realize you want to push the Powerhouse cleaner since its an Ebonite product, but what if the that cleaner is not strong enough for the belt marks and such that get on my ball. Whats another stronger cleaner I can use? How about clean and dull?

My pro shop uses a 50/50 mixture of denatured alcohol and acetone to get the belt and pin marks off a ball, is that OK to use in your opinion..

Please advise..

Denatured Alcohol and Acetone are not approved by the USBC so no it's not okay.

I could not agree more with the two above, since I have started to clean my equipment after each session I have no issues with lost reaction . I did with the Big One, but then again I never cleaned it . I have the Angular one and Smash Time and love them both. You cannot go wrong with the one series or time series

Stay away from acetone, anyway. Not only that it is illegal on competitive balls, it is also very aggressive and will make the material brittle if you use it frequently, because it sucks the softener out of the resin (and any other plastic material). This does not happen over night, but I'd be cautious.

Alcohol should be fine (very good choice IMHO).

Personally, I also use Powerhouse (it is the only one available her at the moment), and I am quite satisfied. Works well on any ball I tried so far.

For deep cleansing I also use a special cleaner made for plastic window frames, which not only does a great cleaning job but also has some additives to keep plastic material fresh and flexible. Since it is a professional cleaner I do not use it frequently.

A mild glass cleaner (alcohol based) has also delieverd good results on surface cleaning for me, but it eats away polish very quickly!

By the way: my SR300 is after frequent use since Sep 06 still in great shape, it has caught only few nicks and is still utterly aggressive - so much that I decided to put a coat of polish onto it for a little more length! But I kept it clean and even did a preventious hot water bath to keep the oil out of the ball as far as I can.

I clean my equipment very frequently if not after every series.  I was just worried because it seemed to be a reoccuring issue especially with the one series.  Total NV, here I come!

I think that the GB XXX coverstock - as many aggresive stuff right now - is very porous and sucks oil quickly. Ball maintenance is a real issue.
On the other side, this stuff is so aggressive, that I'd bet that half of the complaints about non-hooking balls are the sheer lack of oil on the lanes for these balls to perform well...?

I use Track's Clean N' Dull. I like it because it doesn't leave a sheen on a flat surfaced bowling ball the way the Powerhouse cleaner does after a while. I also carry a bottle of Powerhouse with me at the bowling alley for a quick clean if needed as Clean N' Dull is a little bit harder to use as it requires use of a damp towel. I always clean my bowling ball(s) after I get home from bowling.

I use clean and dull on a ball spinner and never have used a damp towel.. How does that work and why do you use a damp towel?

Answer:

"For best results, apply small amount to a clean towel. Apply light pressure in a circular motion, doing 1/4 to 1/2 (of)the ball at a time. REMOVE WITH A DAMP TOWEL, then dry towel and repeat for remainder of ball."

That's what the instructions say to do so, I figure they know what they are talking about.

I, along w/ a teammate, use the Angular One.  Both balls are
fairly new so we haven't seen any signs of them dying out just yet.
We both clean them after each session, and I usually use Clean N
Dull after every 3-4 sets.

Another guy on our team has 2 The Ones.  He did see some lost reaction
after awhile.  He plays the oil a lot more than I do and has a tremendous
amount of revs so I'm sure he's soaking alot more up than me.  He recently
had someone "de-oil" them in some sort of an oven designed for bowling balls
and they have gained most/all of their original reaction back.
