Question about the tnv
« on: May 02, 2007, 06:24:23 AM »
Hi everyone. I have been out of bowling for about 10 years now and have decided to get back into it. I bought the total nv b/c of all the wonderful comments I've read about it and how much hook it is supposed to have. Well I have been practicing with it for about 2 weeks now and I can't make it do anything. I was wondering if there is anything I am supposed to have done to it to make it react the way everyone says it does...or am I just that rusty and suck that bad? I was never a great bowler. I was only 18 and had only been bowling for 2 years, averaged about 185 when I quit...now I'm lucky to bowl a 135...it's so embarrassing and depressing. Any tips/pointers about my ball or my game since I obviously forgot a bit would greatly be appreciated. Thanks a bunch!

By not being able to do anything, what do you mean? No hook? No revs?

Perhaps you are trying too hard, or even expecting too much out of yourself. I used to have a habit of wanting to shoot 20 over my average no matter what I averaged. The moment I got to that 200 average, I expected 220 game in and game out. WRONG ATTITUDE! I learned fast.

If you are able to do so...please post a picture of the way it is laid out.

Do not allow yourself to be discouraged, you have not bowled in awhile and you may have alot of rust to shake off. Your game at this point is probably full on inconsistancies. Practice, practice, practice.

No hook...I'm lucky if I can get it to curve by only 3 boards or so. I'm sure that I am trying to hard to pick up where I left off and I do know it will take some time. I just expected the ball to be quite more reactive than that. When I quit bowling I was using a triton, I believe it was and I would almost have to stand in front of the lane to my left and roll it far right and it would break perfect. Now it's almost as if I'm rolling a straight ball and I'm not used to that at all so I'm completely lost b/c even what I do remember and think I'm doing right is not working.

Deja Vu... I used to bowl competitive in High school but stopped after the last state championship (which I placed 13th individual overall BTW). I am now 33 years old and purchased a Total NV a month ago after over 10 year from bowling my last game.

On my first outing (3-4 games) with the tnv it didn't hook that much which I attributed to the OOB super polished condition and not having the hand I used to have. Since then though I've been averaging about 190 with a high game of 246, not bad if I say so myself after only one month and over 10 years removed from the game.

The ball was awesome in terms of hook after about 30 games. Which I attribute to the surface wearing down on the ball and improving how much hand I get into it. So much so I decided to polish it, which I totally overdid bringing back to it's OOB condition of not so much hook.

Well I am somewhat relieved to hear that I am not the only one experiencing that with this ball. I've not bowled that many games with it yet, but I did have the surface changed on it already and still...nothing.

Have someone at the center who is familiar with the lane dressing watch you throw the ball. Maybe you are playing in the oil and the ball is just skidding.

It is a reactive resin ball. It needs some dry to react.

Can you tell how much your ball is flaring? Either by putting a piece of white tape on your PAP or looking a the oil line tracks when it comes back from the ball return.  I don't know, 3 boards is pretty low even with the OOB surface. No disrespect but I think I can get my plastic spare ball to hook that much.

I'm not sure how to tell...but I do know that 3 boards is not much and that's why I'm getting so discouraged. I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to make a ball do much on the lane until I really got back in my groove, but that's why I wanted such a powerful ball...but that method is not working so far.

Here's a video of me last Sunday with my overly polished T-NV on a medium/heavy condition. I could have played outside the 10 with a bigger hook but with the high polished surface I was getting inconsistent reaction, aka over/under.

I only wish I had that much reaction out of my ball. Before when I bowled I used a plastic ball only to pick up the 10 pin b/c it was not possible with my triton...I pick it up with this ball with no problem, it's a straight shot.

Don't worry you'll make a come back in no time. After getting back into the game I've been going twice a week bowling 5-6 games a session. I'm to a point that I have to take a week off because my wrist has a little pain it it from over use. It's funny because my game is actually stronger than when I left it when I was 18 years old. My body is actually stronger than it was, the equipment is stronger, and I've lost some of my bad habits.

There has been many changes in the game since I left. I'm using a 15lb ball now over a 16lb one. Drilling is so technical now with the asymmetrical cores. The coverstocks are so much better. It's like a new game for me, very exciting for me.

What zipcode are you in?

If you're having problems getting your TNV to read the lanes (aka make a move to the hole), do not be afraid to take a little surface off on the ball.  In it's out of box condition, without sufficient hand or backends, the ball won't be a hook machine.  However, if you take an abralon pad (start low-1500), and see what kind of changes take place, you can fine tune things from there.  Too much midlane @ 1500, go up to 2000 or toss a little polish on her.  Hope this helps.  The TNV box condition is 4000 grit polished.  1500 is quite a step down, but easily altered with a little polish and/or higher grit sanding.

Without seeing you bowl and thus not knowing how you set up at delivry this is really hard to tell you whats going on and why the TNV is not hooking for you there could be to much oil or several other variables to consider why it is not hooking.

you may have your hand to much under the ball or any number of things my suggestion to you would be to find a coach in your area and get them to watch you

one suggestion you might try and this worked with my daughter is when you set up on the approach with the ball in your hand look at where your thumb is pointing and try to get it where it looks like it is pointing towards the 10 on a clock and when you deliver the ball just lift straight up and do not come over the top of the ball and then let us know what it does but like I said my best suggestion to you is to get a coach in your area to watch you
