Of course, Ebonite has not been making bowling balls for 100 years. They were a chemical company. Ebonite is not really a proper name; it is the name of a "thing". The dictionary defines "ebonite" as "a hard nonresilient rubber formed by vulcanizing natural rubber". When the process was discovered, the company was probably formed to take advatange of the product. Ebonite is used to make pens and electricla insulation (at least, at one point in time), among other things.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebonite"Ebonite is one of the earliest forms of plastic. A hard, rigid and shiny resin, it was intended as an artificial substitute for ebony wood. It is actually a very hard rubber first obtained by Charles Goodyear by vulcanizing rubber for prolonged periods. As a result, it is about 30% to 40% sulfur."
