re-released R2 question...
« on: June 21, 2005, 11:14:29 PM »
Finally saw one of these in person when a friend of the shop brought one in to be drilled.  Question I have about the ball is this:

What's the deal with the "Ebonite 100" logo on the ball?  Also, does this logo appear on the Puma re-release as well?

Thanks!

According to pg 52 of Pro Shop Insider, they say Ebonite International Centennial Celebration...I wasn't aware they were that old, but that's what's advertised..?

If you can take a look at it at your pro shop, great info in it.

Of course, Ebonite has not been making bowling balls for 100 years. They were a chemical company. Ebonite is not really a proper name; it is the name of a "thing". The dictionary defines "ebonite" as "a hard nonresilient rubber formed by vulcanizing natural rubber". When the process was discovered, the company was probably formed to take advatange of the product. Ebonite is used to make pens and electricla insulation (at least, at one point in time), among other things.

Also, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ebonite
"Ebonite is one of the earliest forms of plastic. A hard, rigid and shiny resin, it was intended as an artificial substitute for ebony wood. It is actually a very hard rubber first obtained by Charles Goodyear by vulcanizing rubber for prolonged periods. As a result, it is about 30% to 40% sulfur."
