Trying to help a friend set up a 3 ball Ebonite arsenal
« on: August 13, 2004, 06:02:55 PM »
Since the only ball I own in the Ebonite series these days is a V2 Particle, and the only other one I've seen lately thrown is the Killer Instinct sanded, I figured I would pose this question to the Ebonite people on the board. I have a friend who is getting back into bowling on my team this fall, and he hasn't bought new equipment in quite a few years. After speaking with him on the phone he says he would prefer to stick with Ebonite, as he's had good luck with their equipment. He's more of a down and in guy, probably 16-17 mph with medium revs. The conditions he'll be facing run the gamut from a short oil THS (heavier from 8 to 8, much lighter outside of 8) and a reverse block short oil pattern. The balls he's had success with in the past include the Crush, Crush/r and also the Rhino Pro Gold and Teal balls. He's never experienced particle balls before and I want to steer him in the right direction. What recommendations do you have?

Matt

Rye1: Thanks for the offer but I think my friend still throws 15 lbs. and wants to stay at that weight.

As he hasn't been in the game for a while (timeline wise) I would set him up pretty cheaply and not load up on lots of new and wild cores or high differentials especially on the reverse Block situation.
Stinger low Flare Particle- more oil
V2 sweet - medium
Stinger low Flare pearl or even Tornado.- less oil

Again how much oil you see is key in picking what level of ball to use.

I agree that maybe a stinger, tornado and a V2 would be a nice starting point. I bowl strictly Ebonite, currently:
V2 Strong
V2 Clean (my over-all favourite)
V2 Sweet (on order, to be drilled in a few days)
PrimeTime Pearl
Matrix Tps (old but reliable)
Gemstone (mostly for the 10 pin)
If you're going to carry a spare ball it would probably have to be a Maxim since the Gems are not made anymore. Any of the Vortex series is good, the Clean or Sweet probably being the better choice if you're only going to carry one Vortex. I've primarily gone to all polished balls, the strong being the only dull ball I carry.
