Shooter XL Mini-review
« on: September 12, 2004, 02:02:35 PM »
I picked one of these up from Buddiesproshop.com.
I wanted something that had a small amount of hook but still hit. I got that but I am still not happy with the ball.
The ball had a 3 inch pin. The pin is over ring finger, the cg is near grip center, and the MB is in my track. I've tried this ball in a couple of different conditions in two houses. One house is wood and the other is synthetic. Overall, the ball gets excellent length, checks up in the midlane, and then arcs to the pocket. The overall # of boards covered is small. (That's a positive for me.) I have rarely had pocket hits jolt all ten pins into the pit like this.
Now this all sounds great, but I have a major problem. I am an area bowler. Accuracy and exactly duplicating shots is not my strong suit. I chuck the ball right with plentiful revolutions and watch it pound the pins. Speed and release vary a bit with every ball. Sometimes I come around the side of the ball a bit and on other shots I stay behind it more. My speed and release point vary some as well. The balls I do well with put up with my poor shotmaking. They may go a little light or heavy but they stay around the pocket. This combined with a high rev rate leads to a lot of strikes. The Tpc Shooter Xl is very sensitive to my mistakes. It is constantly breaking late or early. Major over under and no area. I took the cover to 2000 grit dull, but it still over/undered and now hooked more. I like this balls hook amount and carry but I can't keep it in the pocket. It's driving me nuts! Suggestions are appreciated!

Put your thumb in haha j/k I would never make you do that! I think if you have it dull and its still getting over/under, theres not a whole let else to do. You could always polish the hell out of it, and play a really straight line with it. Though your not used to it, you can still have pretty good area as long as you keep you speed up.

Inverted1,
I think you are correct when you say that the ball is not meant to create area. It seems to me that this ball is better suited to the bowler who can really repeat their shots. Perhaps that is why it didn't sell well. There aren't many bowlers who can really repeat shot after shot. Most of us do not have that skill level.

This cover likes direct lines and carrydown , the player likes to create area because of its stronger cover. I do have to say i am very accurate plus or minus 1/2 board of my mark every shot but do not believe this ball is a dud in anyway. I do use a 70 degree psa on one of my two xls but the other is a blem ball with the psa 180 degrees off and the ball alomost reacts exactly like the ball with the 70 degree drilling. This ball loves direct lines up say 5-10 or small belly shots like 8 to 2 or something similiar to this were you bounce the ball off the dry area if your house oils this way. I would go back to factory shine say 1200 to 1500 after going down to 600 first or 800 with ebonite quiksand, it will give it more bite under the polish and should give more of a look that the player has to it. The propeller core balls are a steal and carry very well if you properly release them behind the ball they do not like to be spun much IMO, i use different releases and my spinner release leaves splits with the ball off axis. Do not redrill until changing the surface and your release first and if it fails then spend your money to redrill the ball.
