I need help on how to throw less hook if I need too. I sometimes have trouble getting more hook than I need for the shot.

What works for me, I open my palm, using the 'slot' between pads on my hand at the wrist as the aiming point. The ball will go as straight as you aim it. End over end. I use a modified system, throwing over the center arrow, moving in or out depending on what pin I am needing.

This may not work for everyone and it took some time to be confident in the release, but, with many misses, I have no problems with 10 or 7 pins. I kept a record of hits/misses and was in the 95-98% range. Sounds strange, but if I left a 5 pin, that's where I was in trouble. Got used to going cross lanes, I lost a straight line, working on that.

As I said, might not work for you, but worth a few practice shots, anyway. Good Luck !

I flatten my wrist and throw my strike ball, and I can go pretty straight doing that.  You might try that.  You can also take your middle or index finger out, that should help reduce your revs.

i am in a totally different boat with spares. I practice ,I get lined up and get comfortable shooting just about any spare ,in practice, but when the lights come on i cant spare to save my life.
Last weekend I may have made 20 percent of my spares from friday to sunday. And its already started this weekend. I shot 193 last night with a 5 bagger and 4 opens. then shot 201 with an open in the 10th.
First game i flagg the 10 pin, next 5 and leave the 6. ON my 10 pin miss the ball ran high so I stood in the same spot and threw the same shot i had thrown to miss the 10 and missed the 6 , would have had the 10. then a strike and open the 9th and 10th.Its beyond practice for me I have another mental stumbling block.

For 10 pins, I think of them as a 9 pin. Same position, but mentally they are 9's. Sounds strange, but I have not missed right since I started it, IMO, it's all a mental thing, works for me, might work for you ?

I forgot to say that I'm using a Tornado for a spare ball and when the lanes are dry. I just need to work harder on my game.

I will do the old suitcase release on it and it seems to cut the hook down enough to cover the spare.

If that fails, I grab the most awesome spare ball on the market, my Clear XXXL and use that.

Doug, while using the suitcase technique are you still throwing your strike ball?

yessir.....I guess I should say I use a suitcase release with a broken wrist...

if I hold my thumb at 9:00 and fingers at 3:00 pointing straight down the lane the ball does not gain enough rotation to do anything even if I happen to rotate around it a little.....

its more a mental thing than you know. the same focus you use in your first ball you have to use for the spare. Just like you develope your game to strike you have to develope your spare game. I have been working on mine this week and i think i only missed 2 last night.
You have to develope a routine , pattern and a methedology that you can use every time for every spare. One of my biggest problems, i have ,Is that i wasnt confident enough in what i had practiced to do it. I have a urethane ball that works well, but i wouldnt use it on oil because i didnt think it would get to where i wanted . I had to sell out and commit to it .I have to say it saved my butt on quite a few shots where if i had used my strike ball i would have had a drive by.

What works for me:
keep the wrist and hand straight and directly behind the ball.
lead with the ring finger.  That is, as you release use the ring finger to guide the ball to your target.
