Starting over---need some help please
« on: August 01, 2016, 06:10:16 PM »
Ok, I have decided to get rid of most of my equipment and start over.  Getting rid of my big hookers (red Warrior and Warrior Elite).  Going to cut down to two balls (not including plastic) that will cover medium to light league conditions.  Don't need anything for tournaments or sport shots.  Want to stay in the Ebonite family.  Could really use some opinions.

Slower speed (13-15 mph), Average+ revs.  Trying to get back to playing down and in.

Thanks in advance.

Does the shot stay more on the medium side or does it have a lot of break down/friction?

I think you need to consider a Cyclone Black/Gold, a Viral Solid, Pearl and/or a Viral Hybrid, and a Nitrous.
- A Cyclone and Nitrous would be a good combo, as would a Viral Solid and Viral Pearl.
- An alternative would be 2two Nitrous with different drillings and surfaces and two Viral Hybrids with different drillings and surfaces.

Mostly on the medium side.  However, most of my bowling is in an AMF house and you never know what you're going to get.  In my travel league one house is a little heavy to start then levels off at medium.  Another is always dry.  The other two houses are usually medium.

Thanks Charlest.  Sound like good possibilities.  Besides the two Warriors I mentioned, I
have a Columbia Scout that may be close to the Nitrous for dry lanes.  The Virals may be exactly what I'm looking for to use on the medium conditions.  I also have a Track Lx05 that might be good if polished.  I'll probably give it a try before I get a new ball.

What I'm trying to do is make the game simpler and cut out all the ball choices.  At my age I don't need hook monsters.  Since I only bowl in leagues now, I just don't need to carry more than two balls and a plastic ball for spares.

Thanks again.

Thanks again.

I'd look into 1 of the Heat, Viral Hybrid, or Side Swipe as a ball for breakdown or lighter conditions

Either the GB2 MVP, GB2 Phenom, or Track Heat Xtreme for fresh or slightly heavier medium

If you're going to see more breakdown or friction, I'd get a Nitrous and Rebel

If I put together a two-ball arsenal considering the factors you mentioned my choices would be the Viral Hybrid for the lighter conditions and the Cyborg for the medium to slightly heavier conditions. I'd get the Cyborg drilled for more control and the Viral Hybrid drilled for more length.

Although the Cyborg might end up being pretty strong. Track's Youtube channel has some videos about it out and in it one of their guys says it's cover is a mix of the cover from the Paradox and the cover from the Legion Solid. Hard to say what it will actually be like without seeing it in person yet but if you think it might be too strong then the Game Breaker 2 MVP would be a good alternative with the same control drilling in mind.

Whatever you decide on, I would recommend getting one ball and testing it out before deciding on the second ball.  Also, compare it to the Columbia Scout to see how it compares to a weak ball to see if it is a big step up or similar.  Getting the balls one at a time will ensure you have a good idea of what the other one needs to be.

Also, I am not sure how much down and in you will be able to do with low speed and medium revs.  I know that is your goal, but you might have to relegate yourself to playing more in and that may affect your ball choice.

why not adjust surfaces of what you have now, won't take away any strength, but it will change where the ball motion is on the lane.
You can always move your feet inside and try that approach as well
target 12 to 15ish and move your feet by the same amount to try it out.
you might find enough oil to use these still
I try to have a mixture of strengths and surfaces in my bag when you don't know what your going to see.
Definitely a weaker piece goes with me everywhere, then a strong piece, then mix it up in between.
keep in mind that sometimes you have a good look up 5-6-7 and maybe its better at 15 or more. the track area is the most common target and typically has the most friction on the lane because of all the use there.

I would get 1 and try it, but certainly take your balls now to your shop and they will be able to help you, those are good pieces though

Thanks Dave.  That's great advice.  Right now I've narrowed my present balls down to a Track Lx05 (500/2000) (RG2.48/Diff..041) as my "oil"ball, then a Track Mxo5 (500/1000 polished) (same RG and Diff as the Lx) as my medium condition ball and a Columbia Scout for the very dry.  I'm going to try these and hope to cut down to two balls and plastic.  I also have an Ebonite Warrior (red) and the Warrior Elite that I'm going to try different surfaces to see if I can use either of them.  I'm afraid I made a mistake in getting these two as they are too strong for my game unless I run into a lot of oil.

I think in the long run I'll probably settle on the Lx and the Scout for most of the lanes I bowl on. If I'm going to a known dry house, I'll leave the Lx at home and carry the Mx.

Anyway, thanks again for the advice.

try 1000 or 2000 + polish. still gets through the heads and has some teeth downlane
I have also trying something called TRACK delayed reaction which cut down the overall motion by approx 25-33%
Last resort short of re-drill - maybe your shop can add a weight hole to help your situation
