too many choices
« on: December 18, 2005, 07:26:41 PM »
Here are my choices for my next ball: Ebonite overtime, Brunswick vapor zone, or the Columbia action. Looking for an all around ball that has a big backend. Also want a durable coverstock. I know that the vapor zone has a durable coverstock. Not sure about the columbia or overtime. Any opinions?

Go with either of the first two only for the reason that the action is a very cover strong ball. (Great ball!!) Most people do not understand the dynamics of energy retention in bowling and when they buy cover strong balls they become unhappy saying they don't hook like they thought. This is not a knock against you or anyone else just a little information that most pro-shops know but don't always tell. If your looking for bigger backend either polish the cover if its a solid, or go with a pearl.

I'd suggest the OverTime , from the three you listed. Personally, I prefer the Hawg Wild, but that's just me.

I'm going to suggest none of the above.  The Action and the Overtime come dull.  And its typical for dull  heavy oil balls to be more arc-ing then snapping with a big backend.  I have not seen the Vapor Zone in action, but its pearl and reactive resin, so of the three I would guess it has the best chance at some snap at the end.  I'd actually get The One and have it drilled #3 to their suggested drill sheet.  I would NOT get it drilled #1 since we have already plugged and redrilled a few that chose this drilling first.  The #3 layout requires that you kn ow you Axis measurements.  While #1 doesn't.  So the pro shop may need to spend some extra time with you to do this.

From seeing it thrown, the Action does not really have a big snap in box finish, the overtime, which I presently own is rather rolly even shined up.  The vapor is pearl and will have some flip, but it is my experience that the best skid flippers are high rg pearls or strong asyms.  For ex: all morich stuff (except WMB, but even that flipps with the right drill, just not the most), the Rampage, the Intense, etc.  For big backend with less of a skid flip, the best is the One.  All these covers are durable, especially the Big B, but just as a word of caution, I have had experience with the hook again system and it doesn't work well with the activator.
