This is Crazy!
« on: May 28, 2003, 07:20:01 AM »
I like Ebonite's stuff don't get me wrong, but why come out with so many balls at one time like they are doing with the new savage, predator, v2 dry (and another), multiple tornados, and a couple in the TPC line. all of these and I have not even mentioned the Obsession yet.

Correct me if I am wrong, please. Isn't coming out with 5-6 ZONES at a time what ended up hurting Brunswick? Don't get me wrong, Brunswick has a name so old some people cannot help but be loyal. But the Zone Line got so crazy they had to put it to an end.

I like the newer stuff Ebonite has, and they may all be great balls, but it is crazy coming out with so many like they are!

The reasoning behind the number of balls coming out at one time is simple. Instead of coming out with 1-2 new balls per month like every other company seems to do, have 2 realeses per year. One at the start of fall leagues with the majority of you new line for the year, and the second in January for another ball or two in the higher end line. Most people choose to purchase new equipment right before their leagues start and this makes for better ball sales up front. The majority of our new stuff is in the mid-price range and is targeted for all bowlers, not just the higher end scratch players.

As far as Brunswick coming out with 5-6 Zones at a time, that may have been true but it is not the case here. We dont have any more than two balls per series coming out at once. The Tornado line is basically color changes and 2 new additions. Keep in mind that the list of balls that have been discontinued is fairly large also. Ebonite has been doing this for the last few years and it has been proven successful.

Looks like overkill again by Ebonite.

Good balls , but this many balls at once is ridiculous.

What's the problem?  You don't have to buy any of them.  Ebonite has been doing this since the first line of Matrixes came out in 98 or 99 I believe.  What's the difference in dropping 20 balls a year with 10 every 6 months instead of lets say Columbia, The old Brunswick, or most recently Track who give you 2-4 new balls every month?  The totals end up the same, but in my opinion the Ebonite line is so much better since there is hardly any overlap in their releases.  I love Ebonite as a company since when they do release equipment, they do it in a ladder like fashion enabling you to select a good lineup for you.  I know some people will disaggree with me on this but the great thing about bowling is every company gives you different options, if you don't like one don't buy it but dont sit there and complain and try to down their business strategy.

I personally can't wait for the Stinger Low Flare Particle and V2 Dry.  I'm saving my pennies now to grab up 2 of each

In response to that I was not saying it would stray me from buying any of the balls, infact there are a few that I may try. The V2 dry look good, and both the new predator and savage look interesting as well.

I did not post to BASH Ebonite or the equipment they release. If you thought I was doing that I am sorry. But now that bashing Ebonite has been mentioned, I have a very good question....

Do you think they solved the cracking problem from the time they released a bunch of balls at once? They were good balls, but the Adrenaline, Aggression, V2, Intensity, TPC Warrior, Shooter, well....you get the point, the list goes on and on. Maybe the idea that would work would be to try a thicker coverstock to show people the balls would not crack.

Back to the original purpose of the post. The balls released may be great, but why so many?

Am I the only one that thinks it is silly?

Actually, that was meant more for the person above me and not you.  I see where you are coming from as well.  If the balls are cracking that much maybe your driller should drill the holes slower.  I just got into drilling my own equipment 5 months ago and I've noticed when drilling a hole too fast or having the bridge too close, the slightest shift in the drill press while drilling can move the ball causing the bit to sputter and eventually you'll get those pressure cracks spreading.  Either that or exposures to cold temperatures can cause the cracks.  It's not always the coverstock.  If you're cracking near or around the plug there may be either too much hardener in the plug or it  was stirred too long.  Sure there can be company defects on surfaces but I doubt an entire batch or even close to an entire batch could have problems like that.  I have a few of the balls you've mentioned and I've been through 5 other Ebonite balls and I've only experienced cracking on the first Stinger that I drilled with I drilled the fingers a bit too fast.

Keep one thing in mind, not all ball companies attack each price point the same way that Ebonite does. Since Ebonite has several balls in each price range, it seems like there are a lot of balls released at once. Just trying to put a little justification in here.

I don't know about other parts of Europe, but here in Sweden we can get nearly everything that the ball companies release during the first three or four months of the season. After that, only the high-end stuff seems to get here during season. Case in point, Ebonite's Swedish distributor will get the Predator Jungle Green in July - about six months after its release in the US. So a big early release is quite welcome here.

Personally I like it.  Lets say I'm looking for a low rg/agressive cover pearl.  When the release comes out, I know if it is there or not.  In the case of 2-4 balls every month, I may settle for a ball which is the closest to my needs at the time, and a month or two down the road, encounter another release which is better suited.  So now I'm stuck with a ball that is not what I needed, or I sell the ball to get the new one.  Either way, I lose.

Another point is, I can sit back and wait for the reviews to come, and then decide to get the ball I need.  I can't do that if the release is every 1 month.  I won't be able to get any equipment then eh?
